Canada is deeply committed to the principles of sustainable forest management. We are working with domestic and international partners to support healthy forests for generations to come. Today, the Honourable John Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced an investment of over $20 million to support initiatives that advance sustainable forest policy and forest stewardship globally. ISLA, or the Initiative for Sustainable Landscapes, is an international land use management programme of IDH . The ultimate goal of the programme is to reduce and eliminate deforestation, restore, and protect forests and natural ecosystems, and improve incomes for farmers and forest communities.    ISLA is being implemented in a variety of landscapes worldwide and is financed by the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken.   The programme takes the PPI approach – it aims for agricultural products to be grown sustainably (Production), forests and natural resources to be safeguarded (Protection), and communities to thrive (Inclusion) – to build sustainable governance models in these landscapes.    Our colleagues, Greetje Schouten, Rob Kuijpers, Verena Bitzer, Cedric Steijn, Lisa de Graaf, Hector Chavez, and Coen Buvelot, in collaboration with Amalina Az Zahra, Michiel Meijer and Khoa le, recently published a mid-term evaluation of this programme. Besides accountability to the donor, the purpose of the evaluation is to learn and inform strategic decision-making. 🌿 Lessons from the Field to the Boardroom: The Role of Sustainable Business and Finance in Biodiversity Conservation 🌿 Last week, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our ZSL SPOTT platform at Zoological Society of London (ZSL) . The event brought together businesses, investors, conservationists, and scientists to explore sustainable supply chains and the vital role of nature financing in biodiversity conservation. 🔍 Key Highlights: Panel 1: Business and Finance Decision-Making to Halt Deforestation and Protect Biodiversity Annabelle Dodson (ZSL) - Corporate disclosure in the palm oil, rubber, and timber sectors has improved, though the timber and pulp sectors still lag with an average score of 23%. Transparency remains crucial. Sophie De Salis (BRC) - Retailers must tackle deforestation linked to their products through collaborative industry-wide action, especially as the EU Deforestation Regulation approaches. Harry Lukas & Fergus Campbell - Scottish Widows and ZSL showcased mapping biodiversity impacts across investment portfolios, guiding the pension sector to prioritize biodiversity actions. Panel 2: Financing Nature Conservation and Restoration Martin Potgieter (RMB)- Innovative funding models like species impact bonds are essential to make nature investible and attract mainstream investors. In two days time, on 26 September, Tropical Forest Alliance and ISEAL are hosting a webinar on 'Taking the First Step: Supporting Companies to Take Landscape-scale Action'. Momentum is building for companies to take landscape-scale action. However, almost two thirds of downstream and midstream companies identified having had taken landscape-scale action in a recent global study conducted by TFA, Proforest and CDP are supporting only one initiative. This finding indicates that many companies are only at the beginning of their journey in supporting multi-stakeholder efforts to achieve change at scale in production regions. Within this context, the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA), and ISEAL are hosting a Jurisdictional Action Network (JAN) webinar to build understanding on the available tools to assist companies to initiate and/or take more landscape-scale action. These tools include maps of landscape and jurisdictional initiatives and multi-stakeholder processes/ platforms and a roadmap for company effective landscape action and claims. The Tragedy of the Uncommons and the Tragedy of the Commons have significant implications for sustainable and unsustainable global economics. The Tragedy of the Commons is often driven by unsustainable economic practices, such as: - Overfishing and destructive fishing practices - Deforestation and land degradation - Pollution and waste management These practices prioritize short-term economic gains over long-term sustainability, leading to environmental degradation and resource depletion. On the other hand, the Tragedy of the Uncommons is often driven by a lack of recognition and value for unique ecosystems, leading to neglect and degradation. This can be seen in: - The destruction of rare habitats and ecosystems - The extinction of endangered species - The degradation of vulnerable landscapes This neglect can be driven by economic systems that prioritize growth and profit over environmental and social sustainability. Sustainable global economics, on the other hand, prioritize long-term sustainability and environmental stewardship. Milkweed, a plant vital for the survival of monarch butterflies, thrives in areas of rich biodiversity. Its growth and propagation are integral to the monarchs' migration across North America, a journey that captivates many and highlights the intricate connections within our ecosystems. By fostering environments where milkweed can flourish, we not only aid in the conservation of these majestic butterflies but also support the natural balance of our landscapes. The utilization of milkweed as a natural, renewable resource presents a unique opportunity for rural communities. Often, these areas face economic challenges, with limited access to resources and markets. Milkweed cultivation and harvesting can become a source of income for these communities, providing financial stability while encouraging practices that are in harmony with the environment. This approach not only helps in preserving the monarch habitat but also in promoting sustainable development, ensuring that conservation efforts lead to tangible benefits for local populations. Encouraging the use of milkweed and supporting its role in local economies requires collaboration among various stakeholders, including conservationists, farmers, policymakers, and consumers. By raising awareness of the importance of milkweed for biodiversity and monarch conservation, and by supporting products and initiatives that utilize this resource responsibly, we can make a significant impact.
