I started at Open Secrets as Legal Intern, at the time I was merely, trying to scratch my economic crimes itch. With a background in women's rights advancement through strategic African feminist litigation, election monitoring, gender-based violence interventions...I thought it would diversify my public interest experience and give me some insights into creative legal avenues for perpetrators of economic crimes. I could've never anticipated everything I learnt as intern, from: going through financial records and feeling like a secret agent investigating for a financial intelligence authority; to sitting at the #PeoplesHearingonEnergyProfiteers and listening to moving testimonies from community members from towns where mine's and fossil fuel refineries have adversely and disproportionately impacted marginalized people's health; to trying to figure out how property in South Africa is used to launder money - that's actually the cherry on top. The really cool thing about Open Secrets is the team. The witty out-of-the-box campaigning (have you seen our social media accounts), the insightful cutting edge investigating with a legal team pursuing accountability in small and big ways on different platforms - now the people in those teams that make that kind of work possible, those are the people that have brought me so much joy! As my time at Open Secrets draws to an end, I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of a team that has been conducive for my holistic development and growth. I'm in awe at how affirmed, seen and heard I've felt and experienced. Couldn't recommend a better team to be part of, as you continue to work towards social justice. [Getting to Know the Role of a Controller: Insights from My Internship] Apart from studying on campus and embedding the role of controller in external campus organizations, I gained new insight into the role of a controller at PT Elnusa Petrofin, some of which include: 1. Controller Division At PT Elnusa Petrofin (EPN), the role of a controller is unique. Unlike the organization's controller, who is equivalent to the general secretary, the controller at EPN is a division, not an executive. EPN's main core business is distributing fuel supplies throughout the country, which necessitates branch offices in Sabang to Merauke. The increasing demand for supervisory functions in finance due to the numerous branch offices has led to the controller profession becoming a division. 2. Controllers have various supervisory concentrations On a larger corporate scale, the Controller role is a complex web of tasks. It involves supervising business debts (accounts payable), work advances, taxation, and reporting, each carrying its own weight and importance. 3. Controllers are required to understand various financial systems Controllers use a variety of financial systems in their supervisory roles. These include the company Explorer system, System Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP), Executive Dashboard Management (ExDM) and also many more. These systems, along with others, are used to meet the diverse needs of a controller's concentration. While systems are integral to the control process, it's important to note that they are merely a medium. The controller's role is more critical, involving understanding, controlling, and operating these systems, as emphasized by Mr. Budi, the Manager of the Controller section, during our conversation. There are still many other insights that cannot be explained.
