Animal by-products (ABPs) are materials derived from animals that are not intended for human consumption, such as hydrolysed proteins, chitin, and insect frass. Due to being nutrient-dense, they are often used in plant Biostimulants, and they have been proven to enhance plant growth, nutrient uptake, and resistance to abiotic stress. Regulating animal by-products (ABPs) in biostimulants is challenging due to the absence of a defined “end-point” status under the Animal By-Products Regulation for all products except for processed manure. Without this designation, ABPs face intense regulatory challenges, limiting their use in fertilising products and restricting farmers’ access to these innovative tools. This regulatory gap also leaves Component Material Category 10 (CMC 10) of Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 unfilled, as no formal end points for ABPs have been recognised.
