The AAEP joins other veterinary associations in opposing Colorado’s Proposition 129, which will allow “veterinary professional associates” to provide treatment to animals – including performing surgery – after only three semesters of online study and a single semester of basic skills training. Lowering the standards of animal care is not the answer for increasing veterinary access in rural communities. What rural areas need are meaningful incentives to attract fully trained veterinarians, not the introduction of a second-tier system that compromises animal safety, food safety and public health. https://lnkd.in/eKYtjGDE

In a groundbreaking stride for veterinary medicine in Canada, Toronto Humane Society recently published Canada's first-ever comprehensive analysis of access to veterinary care. The study, titled “Trends in companion animal access to veterinary care in Canada, 2007 to 2020,” delves into existing data from various sources over the thirteen-year period, shedding light on crucial trends and challenges within the industry. The study stands as a pivotal milestone in #Canadian veterinary care, shedding light on critical issues and providing a foundation for future discussions and initiatives. Prior to this work, we relied heavily and solely on US based resesarch. The hope is that these findings will spark collaborative efforts across the industry to ensure accessible, high-quality veterinary care for all companion animals across the nation.

James Cook University - Veterinary Science Hopefully someone in year 11 or 12 will come across this. Do *not* to go JCU for Veterinary Science. The AVBC (Australasian Veterinary Boards Council) has changed JCU's VetSci from "accredited" to "probationary accreditation" and if the course does not improve over the next 1-2 years, JCU's VetSci course might completely lose its accreditation. This would mean that if you graduate from JCU's Veterinary Science you would not be accredited to work as a veterinarian. JCU is also considering changing their Veterinary Science course to trimesters. This is going to be way too much work & stress, and is going to make it less likely for them to gain "accredited" status again (since one of the reasons for losing accreditation is that the workload is already too much for staff and students). I am writing this on LinkedIn so that it will be considered more 'professional', because this is really important. If you get accepted into two universities, and one of them is JCU, do not choose JCU.

Positive steps from the RCVS on this important issue!
RCVS have updated the Code of Conduct guidance on referrals! This is really important, please share and make sure your employer is aware of the new guidance Please see the updated guidance below: Reference: Section 1 Veterinary Surgeons and Animals, supporting guidance Referrals and Second Opinionssection 1.6, 1.7; Section 3 Veterinary Surgeons and the profession Section 3.5 supporting guidance 23 Advertising, endorsement and publicity Section 23.28 1 - Amended guidance re referrals July 2024 1.6 The referring veterinary surgeon has a responsibility to ensure that the client is made aware of the level of expertise and/or status of appropriate and reasonably available referral veterinary surgeons. In particular, veterinary surgeons should identify whether the possible referral surgeons are on the RCVS Specialist list or the RCVS Advanced Practitioner list and, where relevant, explain the difference between the two, as well as what sets them apart from other veterinary surgeons who might be willing to accept the referral. Where referral to a practice rather than a specific individual is being considered, the referring veterinary surgeon should explain the experience and status of the veterinary surgeons working within that referral practice to the client in the same way. This context is crucial for clients seeking to make an informed decision about what is best for their animal. Veterinary surgeons must not describe a referral veterinary surgeon as a Specialist, or as an Advanced Practitioner, unless they are on the respective RCVS list. Where requested, veterinary surgeons accepting referrals should provide information to referring veterinary surgeons regarding the experience and status of those likely to be responsible for any given case. 1.7 When referring cases, veterinary surgeons should explain any links to the referral practice that could be considered a conflict of interest to the client, including where the practice being referred to is owned by the same group. 2 - New guidance re use of ‘consultant’ and other descriptors When describing the experience or seniority of those working within their practice, veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in clinical practice should focus on recognised veterinary terms such as ‘RCVS Specialist’ and ‘RCVS Advanced Practitioner’. Use of other terms, such as ‘consultant’ and ‘referral surgeon’, should be avoided to prevent confusion and/or the implication that individuals hold further qualifications (RCVS recognised or otherwise) when they do not. 3 - New guidance re use of ‘specialist’ in business names Veterinary surgeons may only use ‘specialist’ in the name of their practice where there is genuine and meaningful involvement, and oversight, in case management by at least one RCVS specialist in all disciplines where any clinical services are offered under this business name. With more and more research getting published on the benefits of ashwagandha for animals, IVCJ wanted to discuss the benefits with a veterinarian who actually uses this adaptogen herb. Editor-in-chief Dana Cox sat down with Keith Weingardt, a veterinarian and herbalist who uses ashwagandha in veterinary practice and has also created formulations with it. #veterinarycare #veterinary #integrativeveterinarymedicine #veterinarymedicine #innovativeveterinarycare #ashwagandha #ksm-66-ashwagandha Ixoreal Biomed
