In a statement, Minister of State (MoS) Rajeev Chandrasekhar commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's remarkable achievements in the digital economy sphere. Chandrasekhar attributed the nation's success in this domain to PM Modi's visionary leadership and strategic initiatives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significant risks posed by ongoing geopolitical conflicts to the global economy and energy security during the Kautilya Economic Conclave. Referring to the Israel-Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars, Modi emphasized that despite global instability, India’s economy remains a bright spot with rapid growth. India's economic performance surpassed expectations, recording an 8.2% growth in 2023-24. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has projected 7.2% growth for the current fiscal year. In this piece, I reflect on how Modi remains a bit of a puzzle in Indian politics—always present, always impactful, yet hard to predict. He’s bold, sometimes divisive, but undeniably savvy. Even his critics can’t help but respect his staying power and political skills. I expected Modi to lead the BJP to another big win in the recent elections, but things didn’t go as planned. The BJP actually lost in several key states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, which was a shock after almost a decade of dominance. Issues like rising unemployment, inflation, and controversial policies, like the Agnipath recruitment scheme, left voters frustrated. Despite these setbacks, BJP pulled off a surprising win in Haryana, defying expectations of a Congress victory. It was close, but the BJP managed to win over non-Jat voters, leaving Congress scrambling with internal issues. Now, for the first time in a while, Modi’s heading a coalition government. He’s got to keep regional allies like Janata Dal (United) and Telugu Desam Party on his side, which means juggling their demands with his own party’s goals. It’s not as easy as before, where he could just push through his agenda with a majority. Looking ahead, state elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi will be critical. The stakes are high, and these upcoming elections will reveal whether the BJP can hold onto power or if India’s political scene is shifting toward more coalition dynamics.
