Bacterias are the workhorses of wastewater treatment. These microscopic organisms play a crucial role in breaking down organic matter and converting it into harmless byproducts. Aerobic Bacteria: These bacteria require oxygen to survive and thrive. They are primarily used in the initial stages of treatment to break down organic matter into simpler compounds. Anaerobic Bacteria: These bacteria can survive without oxygen. They are employed in the later stages of treatment to break down complex organic matter into methane gas and other byproducts. 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 Floating sludge in secondary clarifier is a common issue that occurs in wastewater treatment. There are three direct reasons for this issue. 1. Dead sludge 2. Sludge aging or disintegration 3. Air bubble generation Common reasons for dead sludge are excessive oil content, too high or too low pH, Salinity shocks, excessive temperature or sludge poisoning. Once bacterial cell has died it lose the activity and starts to release cytoplasm reducing its density. Thus the cell starts to float. Sludge aging or disintegration is caused due to low organic loading, nutrition imbalances, excessive sludge age or excessive aeration. Air bubbles are generated in the system due to following reasons. 1. Denitrification in the secondary clarifier 2. Anaerobic digestion at the bottom 3. Large amounts of surfactants in the effluent 4. Air bubbles carry over from the aeration tank to clarifier #WastewaterTreatment #SludgeManagement #ClarifierIssues #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalEngineering #WastewaterTreatmentPlant #WaterPollution #SewageTreatment #Clarification #SustainableWater #WaterResources #EcosystemHealth #EngineeringSolutions #SludgeDisposal #CircularEconomy

MLSS, or Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids, are a critical component in the activated sludge wastewater treatment process. These suspended solids are vital for efficient biodegradation of organic pollutants, ensuring cleaner treated water. Maintaining an optimal MLSS concentration is key for a balanced Food-to-Microorganism (F/M) ratio. This ratio influences the efficiency of biodegradation without overwhelming the microorganisms, contributing to effective wastewater treatment. Moreover, a healthy MLSS aids in the settling process post-treatment, allowing for the efficient separation of water from solids. Additionally, MLSS serves as a buffer, stabilizing treatment processes against fluctuations in influent wastewater characteristics. #MLSS #Wastewatertreatment #Wastewater #WaterIndustry #UKWaterIndustry
