Donald Trump’s victory stirs global energy shifts as European clean energy shares dip, while returning our attention to these shores, the National Energy System Operator has outlined the ambitious path to UK clean power by 2030. Andy Holyland, Managing Director of Opergy Net Zero, says: "Clean power 2030 is achievable! In reality, it has always been achievable but like so many ambitions and priorities, it relies on 'our choices'." There was also news from National Grid, which is reportedly eyeing up whether it could fast-track two power cable projects - one of which is the 114-mile Tilbury to Norwich scheme, which has attracted its fair share of opposition. Opergy Managing Director, Johnathan Reynolds, says bringing that and Sea Link forwards would be a "win-win" for energy security and sustainable economic growth and is "exactly the kind of forward-thinking commitment" that the UK's clean energy sector needs right now. 'This poll shows that the American people see how essential this clean energy resource is,' said Stephanie McClellan, executive director of Turn Forward. 'Offshore wind energy is becoming an economic driver in the US, one that can deliver tens of thousands of good-paying jobs, boost local economies and create a more reliable and equitable energy system,' she added… Some 65% of coast residents support the Biden administration’s goal of building enough offshore wind energy to power 10 million homes by 2030… The administration is targeting 30GW of installed offshore wind capacity in US waters by 2030… Federal coastal energy regulator Bureau of Ocean Energy Management auctioned acreage facing California’s coastline holding some 7GW of potential capacity in 2022, with development activities already underway. A major milestone has been reached with the approval of a multi-billion pound subsea cable, set to create an "electric superhighway" between Scotland and England. It’s been good to be back in Oxford today at the annual Aurora Spring Forum. The conference always attracts very experienced speakers including Vattenfall’s senior vice president and head of strategic development, Andreas Regnell. He spoke on a panel about the opportunities and risks for offshore wind, and there was plenty to talk about. The challenges in building an offshore wind industry in the UK are well known - grid restrictions, a slow planning system, supply chain and skills/people squeezes, and lingering investor uncertainty. But there’s lots to be positive about too: the challenges are well known and industry, government and regulators are responding, and we have great wind resource and a very experienced sector.
