In the early 1900s, #pink was seen as bold and strong and used for baby boys; while blue was considered more delicate and was preferred for baby girls. It wasn’t until after World War II that this flipped, with pink becoming the symbol of femininity we know today.🩷 As we celebrate #OctoberPink in honor of #BreastCancerAwareness, this shift in color association reminds us how much societal norms can change over time. Yet, one thing remains constant: pink is a color of strength, regardless of gender. Girly girls were expected to embrace femininity, enjoy dresses, and prefer activities like playing with dolls. Tomboys, on the other hand, were seen as more boyish, enjoying sports, getting dirty, and avoiding traditional feminine interests. 👀 New Way: Embracing Individuality and Uniqueness Today, we celebrate individuality and uniqueness, recognising that these traits are not limited to specific gender roles. We understand that everyone is different, and these differences should be celebrated rather than constrained by societal norms. Girls can be athletic and still love fashion. They can enjoy playing with trucks and also adore painting their nails. The old labels of girly girl and tomboy no longer fit the diverse range of interests and personalities that girls can have. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 The Power of Choice It’s empowering for girls to have the freedom to choose who they want to be, without feeling pressured to conform to outdated stereotypes. World Afro Day 2024 It’s the seventh anniversary of #WorldAfroDay – a day to celebrate not just your hair but your relationship with it and acknowledge hair discrimination and the different behaviours and microaggressions that can come with wearing hair naturally whether with an afro, braids, dreadlocks, fades or locs. The vision of the founder is a global day of celebration and liberation for Afro hair and identity. But what does that mean and why is it necessary? Some of our Black members gave examples of micro-aggressions that they have faced working on the railway – 🤔 Wore a headscarf to work and was asked “Am I bringing ghetto into the workplace?” 🙄 Can I touch your hair? 😔 Is that a wig or extensions? 😶 You’ve changed your hair again! 😡 I understand why you use extensions now 😭 😩 Having a conversation with a colleague about next hair appointment – a line manager told me to go for straight hair than curly as it’s more professional rather than fluffy. 👷🏾♀️ Have you faced hair discrimination at work? 🎒 Have your children faced hair discrimination at school? ⛑ Can you fit your locs under the hard hat? Thought provoking. Why would anyone intentionally reduce the beliefs of someone else about themselves? Who benefits? But systematically societies, and some cultures more than others, seem to do just that regarding girls/women’s self belief and the same happens with other sectors of society. What can we do? If we take a moment to consider how things we say things and what we do, and how these may play to reinforce historical societal beliefs, to notice before communicating, and adapting what we say before saying it, then in time we can irradicate these self perpetuating patterns.

Earn your stripes. As someone with rainbow nails, a pride tattoo and former rainbow hair (it will return), you'd think I'd be all for slapping a rainbow on logos this month. But that's not the case. It's time for companies to earn their stripes. How? Sponsor pride events. Work to eliminate the biases that mean trans, nonbinary and gender non-conforming people are less likely to be employed by you. Look closely at your family policies, and challenge language that assumes a heterosexual and cis default. Check if your healthcare provider covers gender affirming care. Educate line managers to support LGBTQIA+ staff. Examine the practices of the companies you partner with. Install gender neutral facilities. And most importantly: Consult with your LGBTQIA+ colleagues to find out what they need. Then provide it. Earn. Your. Stripes.
