Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) has begun the tender process for the supply of seven new electric ferries for the Clyde and Hebrides network. The first phase of the Small Vessels Replacement Programme (SVRP) is estimated at around £175 million and will encompass the new ferries plus port improvements and shore power upgrades. “We welcome the Scottish government’s decision to progress the SVRP,” said Kevin Hobbs, chief executive at CMAL. “What matters for us is being able to move forward with our plans to improve the fleet with new vessels. This is great news for island communities, and we look forward to delivering the all-electric lifeline vessels over the coming years.” The first stage of the process will assess if shipyards interested in bidding for the contract meet the financial and technical criteria to take on the project. The invitation to tender is expected to issue around September 2024, with a view to awarding the contract in March 2025. “The Scottish government is absolutely committed to improving our ferry fleet to better meet the needs of island communities, so I’m very pleased to see the procurement process for seven new small vessels get underway,” said Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop. The ferries will be deployed on seven existing routes and a further two routes will also benefit from the redeployment of existing vessels. These nine routes currently represent around 30% of the car and passenger carryings on the Clyde and Hebrides network. Our government is committed to engaging with Albertans, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and industry throughout the development of the Passenger Rail Master Plan to gain their perspectives and crystalize a shared vision for the future of passenger rail in the province. To advance the province’s vision for passenger rail, we are hosting a one-day forum to allow Alberta communities, industry, and experts to collaborate and share information on passenger rail opportunities and challenges. The forum includes experts from Ontario, Quebec, California, Italy, Spain and Japan involved in passenger rail procurement, governance and operations. As part of our commitment to public engagement on the development of the Passenger Rail Master Plan, we are launching an online survey inviting Albertans to share their input on the optimal passenger rail system for Alberta. o There will be additional opportunities for Albertans to have their say on passenger rail in the future, including regional open houses which will be held in early 2025.

A planning application the height of 5 double decker buses. £300 million has been spent on 359,000 pages of planning application for the Lower Thames Crossing. Yet it could be scrapped as part of measures to plug the £22 billion "black hole" in government funding. Cancellation of such a major infrastructure project has knock-on effects across the construction industry as major players spread risk across their supply chain.
