I like to say that your job as a leader is to help your direct reports become the best version of themselves. And the best way to do that is through consistent and effective one-on-one meetings. The Tyler Perry Studios movie, #sixtripleeight tells the incredible story of the all-Black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion during WWII. These trailblazing women faced immense challenges, yet they undertook the "small" but monumental task of clearing a massive backlog of undelivered mail—restoring morale for countless soldiers and families. Their mission reminds us as leaders that no task is truly small when it serves a greater purpose. Whether it's responding to a simple email, checking in on a team member, or streamlining a process, these actions create ripple effects that can shape organizational culture and drive success. The Six Triple Eight teaches us: Every task matters: What seems minor to you might mean the world to someone else. A feud between elites and the American people often mirrors the clash between outspoken, transparent leadership and a more covert, strategic approach. Imagine the vocal leader as someone openly declaring their plans, akin to a general rallying troops on the battlefield, while the sniper strategy involves subtle, calculated actions to achieve goals, reminiscent of a shadowy figure operating behind the scenes. Each approach has its merits and drawbacks, but both can provoke intense debates about power dynamics and representation. Be the sniper.

Making a Difference: Servant leaders know that the team is only as strong as its weakest link. In the Marine Corps, we were taught that the formation moves only as quickly as the slowest man. This is in part because Marines believe in no man being left behind. As Servant Leaders, it's our responsibility to know that pace - to know our weakest link - and to help them convert their shortcomings (aka weaknesses) into strengths. Put differently, Servant Leaders understand that equity as an end goal doesn't hinge on someone's starting position; rather, it hinges on how we tip the scale to enable a less advantaged team member to catch up. God wasn't discouraged by Paul's starting position (Acts 7:58); rather He tipped the scale by turning Paul's weaknesses into strengths He could use. So, Servant Leader, what are you doing to tip the scales in your team's favor?

Avoidance seems easy, but it's not. And we, as leaders, cannot get people to our shared goal, if we are avoid the tough situation. Lean in. Ask for help. Build the team to tackle it. Get out front and point the way. Lead dammit. Side note: Major Richard Davis Winters was one of the finest examples of a leader that this country has produced. His implacable commitment to the mission and to his soldiers was felt in every decision, and every action. I have read multiple books about him and his time in the 101st Airborne during WWII.
