🌍 World COPD Day 2024: Know Your Lung Function 🌬️ This 20th of November, join us in recognising World COPD Day, a global initiative led by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). This year’s theme, “Know Your Lung Function,” highlights the importance of measuring lung health, not just for diagnosing COPD, but for lifelong well-being. Early spirometry tests can detect lung issues long before symptoms appear, offering a chance for timely treatment and better quality of life. Let's raise awareness of COPD and the many factors—beyond tobacco smoke—that can affect our lung health. #WorldCOPDDay #COPDAwareness #LungHealth #KnowYourLungs https://loom.ly/0hiB4aQ

I recently read an article on how the number of global COPD patients is projected to reach nearly 600 million by 2050. According to data from 2020, COPD impacted approximately 480 million people around the world, equating to 10.6% of the total population (and a whopping 16.8% of North Americans). These numbers are big, but they aren’t surprising to someone who works in the #copd space. In general, I believe there needs to be greater awareness of COPD – not only of the risk factors to help prevent the disease but also increased knowledge of symptoms so the condition can be managed better, earlier. If COPD rates continue to rise, it’s evident that a greater burden will be placed on patients, providers, and hospitals. Luckily, in the words of Dr. Diego Maselli Caceres, a thought leader in this area and nationally recognized pulmonologist at @UT Health in San Antonio, "There has never been a better time to be diagnosed with COPD." This is because of proven digital continuous monitoring platforms like Spire Health that can better serve this challenging patient population. Finding and treating people with undiagnosed asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) improved their health and reduced their health care visits for respiratory symptoms in the year after diagnosis, according to a world-first clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This is the first study to prove that treating those people makes a real difference to their health and quality of life. "It's estimated that 70 per cent of people with asthma or COPD go undiagnosed," said study lead Dr. Shawn Aaron, a senior scientist and lung specialist at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa. COPD: Need to Bridge Awareness Gaps in Care Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains one of the most significant healthcare challenges worldwide, impacting approximately 12% of the global population. In Europe and emerging markets, the burden of COPD is significant. Late diagnoses and limited access to optimal care often leave patients struggling with severe symptoms and complications, significantly affecting their quality of life. The economic impact is equally staggering. In the European Union alone, direct annual costs associated with COPD are estimated at €38.6 billion—a figure that emphasizes the need for urgent and sustained intervention. Beyond its respiratory challenges, COPD places individuals at heightened risk of cardiopulmonary complications, premature mortality, and comorbid conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, making comprehensive care a critical need. Early intervention is key to addressing this growing health crisis. Greater awareness of risk factors—such as smoking, environmental pollution, and occupational hazards—paired with regular health screenings, can significantly improve early detection and outcomes. However, awareness alone is not enough. Ensuring equitable access to innovative therapies and integrated care solutions is vital for empowering patients and improving their quality of life. This requires a collaborative approach, uniting healthcare professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders to prioritize holistic, patient-centered care. Together, we can create a healthcare ecosystem that supports early diagnosis, provides access to cutting-edge therapies, and offers long-term disease management. At Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, we are committed to transforming the lives of patients living with COPD. By introducing effective therapies and exploring novel treatment approaches, we aim to address the diverse needs of COPD patients. Our mission is to improve their quality of life and provide them with the care they deserve. Whether it’s through raising awareness, supporting patients, or advancing innovative solutions, we all have a role to play. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of millions, ensuring a healthier future for those affected by COPD. #WorldCOPDDay #RespiratoryHealth #COPDAwareness #HealthcareInnovation #Pharmaceuticals #PublicHealth #PatientEmpowerment #LungHealth Glenmark Pharmaceuticals
