Element is off to the races with a new raise while Illumina plays catch-up on single-cell There hasn't really been much excitement on the technology side in the short-read sequencing tools space since Ultima announced its commercial launch at the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology conference in February. But there were two interesting developments this week that are worth a discussion. Element announced on Thursday that they had closed a series D raise of $277m. They intend to use the funds to help commercialize their new 'cell profiling multi-omic platform,' Aviti24, and to help fuel growth of their instrument business. The other somewhat interesting development this week was that Illumina announced that they had acquired a single-cell prep company, Fluent Biosciences. Fluent are the inventors of PIPseq, a quick and easy single-cell sequencing method that uses a standard benchtop vortexer to emulsify single-cells for sequencing. I agree with Daphne Koller - a couple of years ago a more granular programming background was a necessity for success in this field. Today, developments in LLMs as computational programming aids have opened up the field to non-expert programmers. This allows experts in the medical and biochemical sciences to use their contextual expertise and analytical abilities to better direct computational experiments and data analysis, which can have a big impact in preventing or redirecting misguided AI/ML hype.

Important progress update from Nanite, one of our funded projects. They are tackling Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A by reducing PMP22 expression to combat its effects on peripheral nerves. Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) show promise, but delivery hurdles remain. That's where their innovative polymer-based encapsulation comes in. Using machine learning, Nanite is designing a diverse array of delivery vehicles to safely transport nucleic acid payloads. Year one highlights include polymer library generation, ASO payload activity examination and successful polymer encapsulation verification in vitro.    Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gKbDbNEM

As we approach the incorporation of SynPlexity as a Delaware C corporation, I wanted to offer a sneak peek into the progress we’ve made towards our first product offering. Behind the scenes, we’ve been hard at work with a variety of readiness activities. During our discussions with investors, there is naturally an interest in our capabilities. Rest assured; we are a company that is ready to hit the ground running. Our first offering is based on the successful synthesis of 86 unique libraries, with significant work that meets the standard for product development. In the course of the work, we stand behind 150 successful total syntheses to date, including a high-profile collaboration with a leader in the industry. Additionally, significant efforts over the past year were invested in the development of enabling elements for the core technology.  These achievements mark significant milestones not only for our team but also for our customers as it is our mission to scale innovation. Looking ahead, we’re not resting on our laurels. Last week marked the beginning of planning for our third product offering, which promises to be a significant departure from our initial products. This upcoming product is designed to further push forward what is possible in large scale proteomics discovery.
