Working with studios and clients as a solo artist remotely requires more than just knowing about design, lighting and materials. There's plenty of practices and concepts that freelancers need to know in order to properly and successfully collaborate with studios around the world. In my 10+ years of experience I've gathered these skills through trial and error and I wanted to share these findings with other artists (seasoned and new). 3 tips that have helped me as a freelance motion designer: 1. Make what you want to get paid to make. Most of the time it’s difficult for a client to use their imagination about your capabilities if you haven’t already made something similar to what they want. This isn’t always the case, but for obvious reasons a potential new client will often gravitate towards choosing a freelancer who already has proven experience creating what they want. Your portfolio should include strong examples of the type of work you want to be making for clients. Doing this as an exercise will not only strengthen your opportunities with new clients, but will also give you more confidence with the work you do in the future. Take advantage of all the online resources there are to learn new skills, whether it’s Youtube tutorials or enrolling in a School of Motion course for example. 2. Pay attention to new tools that other motion designers are using. Even seasoned motion designers who have been in the industry for many years have to pick up new skills and learn new programs for client projects at times. Being adaptable to the needs of a project or team is huge as a freelancer, and shows that you’re capable of handling a curve ball and tackling unfamiliar challenges. Additionally, staying up to date with emerging tools and technologies demonstrates to clients that you’re evolving alongside the industry. One tool that I’ve been spending a lot of time with lately is Fable, which is an entirely web-based motion design app. With many designers shifting towards cloud-based design tools with improved ease of use, apps like this are becoming essential to have in your toolkit. 3. Continuously engage with the type of work you want to do — it seems obvious but it’s important to surround yourself with work that inspires you. Actively look for new design inspiration and make it a daily habit to make note of new skills that you want to learn to create the type of work that excites you. A lot of designers who are early on in their career are still trying to develop their personal style, and a great way to do that is to study work from designers that you look up to. Story time: Finding that sweet spot between two worlds can be a big challenge, but oh so rewarding. In my first years of being a freelance motion designer, I thought it was always about making the best work. And that work would bring in more work. How wrong I was, thinking it would be so simple. Nowadays, I’m so keen on actually connecting. With clients, truly collaborating on a project and each playing to our expertise. Going really into the why, the reasoning and challenges a client has. And how to find that sweet spot that brings light and freedom to a cause. But also with fellow peers. Building up a community of sorts. Supporting each other, taking from both worlds on being a creative and a business owner. A rising tide life all boats, something I hold very dear. And yes, sometimes we all stumble. Needing to find our footing again. But there’s always a way to find balance again. Finding that sweet spot between two worlds. Brining light to a cause, into the open, into the world. Education and Certification: Acquiring professional courses or certifications in 3D motion design can enhance your credibility and make you stand out in job applications. 6. Client Relationship Management: Deliver projects on time and ensure you meet client expectations. This builds your reputation, leading to referrals and repeat business. Following these steps will significantly increase your chances of landing a job as a 3D motion designer.

4 months ago I made a post about this small group of 3D artists that meets up to talk and work through their projects and creative lives. Since then, 3 of those artists were able to secure paid freelance work and full-time positions... as 3D artists. 1 is now a lead 3D generalist part time, while wrapping up freelance work. 1 nailed her multi-month freelance project (paid on-time, in full). and 1 just started his first full-time 3D job as 3D product visualizer. This all happened during the hardest part of the 3D industry. Work is out there. You just have to know how to attract it. Which is what Mike "Cash" Cacciamani, me, and everyone else in the community helps each other do. This group is not a course, it's not about technical skills, and we learn so much more from each other then any online tutorials. It is a path of self-discovery. It's helping artists self-realize so they can self-actualize. It's also really fun. The discoveries made there lead us to the projects we want to dedicate our time and skills to, and of course, get paid for. If you want to learn more about this group, hit me up. Today I talk about the ones that used to work with us: Find a freelance Motion designer, go to his website, and see the clients he worked for. Chances are, you’ll get a list of highly potentiel clients, because they have worked with a freelancer, they know what to excpect from you. I chose Peter Tarka as an example, but you can do it with pretty much every big Motion designer out there.
