“I Have a Feeling No One Reads My Resume” Everyone’s talking about the wonders of AI in the workplace. How it helps process huge volumes of data, streamlines workflows, and even matches candidates to jobs faster. But can we take a moment to talk about the downside? Because honestly, I have a sneaking suspicion my resumes aren’t even being read. Like clockwork, every Sunday evening, I get a bunch of rejection emails. And not just one or two – we’re talking several all at once. Now, who’s actually working on Sunday night? It feels automated. I can’t shake the feeling that my applications are being automatically filtered out, without anyone even opening them. Here’s the kicker: I believe it’s all about keywords. Sure, AI can scan a resume in seconds, but what if the keywords I use don’t match exactly what’s in the recruiter’s search? Even if they’re synonyms or close enough, they might as well be invisible to the system. It’s like screaming into the void. It’s frustrating because there are so many talented professionals out there who might have everything a company needs, but because the AI didn’t recognize the right keywords, their resumes are tossed into the digital abyss. We end up missing out on opportunities not because of our qualifications, but because of the rigid language requirements imposed by the system. I get that AI is here to stay and can do incredible things. But when it comes to resumes, relying so heavily on keyword matching without nuance means companies are likely overlooking the exact people they’re looking for. This disconnect is shutting out qualified candidates who could be the perfect fit, and that’s a problem we need to address. INFORMATION MISSING AI is the new best thing since sliced bread, perhaps since the wheel! Since fire even! I hear it being peppered in every conversation, and I'm old enough to have heard similar things in the past: the internet will take our jobs; computers will take our jobs; video killed the radio star; machines will take our jobs; horses will take our jobs... OK, not THAT old. So will AI kill recruitment agencies? Nah. At Lumina Talent Agency, we know that information found is as good as the information given. AI works with existing data. Every time we pick up the phone and talk to a candidate, we discover many important skills and experience they omitted from their CV. Sometimes because they did not think it was important, sometimes because they wanted to keep it concise -- whatever the reason -- these excellent candidates are often overlooked because they were taken at face (CV) value, and few CVs tell the whole story. Every time we talk to a client to qualify a job, we look for details and factors that are rarely included in a job ad, context that influence their decision as to who would be the perfect candidate for the job. AI can't read minds (yet). Information given is at best a teaser. Don't rely on guess work, don't fill in the blanks -- get on the phone! Fire those open-questions! Build rapport! Connect! Job applications have turned into a game of volume—and no one is winning. I’ve heard friends say they’ve applied to 200, even 300 jobs. Some are using AI to send out 1,000 applications in one click. Tools like LinkedIn Easy Apply have made applying so simple that the process has lost its purpose. Even parts of the process designed to show intent—like the cover letter—are disappearing. Instead of thoughtful applications, recruiters are flooded with spam, and candidates who genuinely care about the role get buried in the noise. If I apply 1,000 times and someone else does the same, how is a recruiter supposed to figure out who’s the best fit? There’s no signal.
