Tomorrow, on #GlobalSurgeryDay (May 25), I will be running 77 kilometers in and around Geneva, shaping a ❤️ just ahead of the 77th World Health Assembly. #WHA77 One in 100 children is born with congenital heart disease (CHD), yet over 90% cannot receive the care they need. Over 40 million people live with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) worldwide, yet cardiac surgical care is unavailable in over 100 countries and territories. The World Health Assembly is the major platform for health decision-making by the World Health Organization and all associated 194 Member State Ministries of Health. Historically, CHD, RHD, and cardiac surgical care have been missing from the global health agenda. Increasing evidence suggests that a change is needed: beyond the moral argument to save the lives of millions of children, adolescents, and adults around the world, investing in cardiovascular care is cost-effective, supports countries' economic growth, and can contribute to spillover effects on all parts of health systems. With this fundraiser, I am raising awareness about the gaps in CHD and RHD care with all funds going directly to the Global Alliance for Rheumatic and Congenital Hearts (Global ARCH). Global ARCH, driven by the ever-so-incredible Amy Verstappen, Kate Doherty-Schmeck, Disty Pearson, Shelagh Ross, and Board from all corners of the globe, supports approximately 100 patient-family organizations around the world, including half in low- and middle-income countries. Patients and families are at the heart of any health policy, program, or initiative, but they cannot do it alone. Will you help us support them? 👉 Donate here (every donation will be matched by a generous donor!): https://lnkd.in/eNQB8vtD 🤔 Every hour, I will post an update and advocacy message to keep raising awareness–and hold myself accountable. 🙏 Let others know: about Global ARCH, about the The Global Surgery Foundation, about the Global Cardiac Surgery Initiative, about the global disparities, and about what we all can do, together. 🫶 Consider creating your own #HeartsAroundTheWorld path, any way you like, wherever you are. My planned route for tomorrow 👇

Celebrating World Blood Donor Day! Dr. Dinesh Arora, Head of Transfusion Medicine at SHALBY Sanar International Hospitals in conversation with HT City, highlights the importance of blood donation and clears up common misconceptions surrounding it. Have you ever hesitated to donate blood because of tattoos, piercings, or the thought of pain? Rest assured, these concerns are often based on myths. You can safely donate after a year of getting a tattoo or piercing if you’re symptom-free. And donating blood is quick, typically taking less than an hour, with minimal discomfort. Regular blood donors benefit from reduced heart attack risk and balanced iron levels. Plus, the health checkup before donation can help detect potential health issues early. Your donation can make a massive difference. It supports patients undergoing surgeries, those battling cancer, and individuals with conditions like anemia and thalassemia. It also aids women experiencing pregnancy complications and accident victims. Let’s celebrate this World Blood Donor Day by spreading awareness and encouraging others to become lifesavers! Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin has issued an emergency appeal due to a blood shortage! To meet the needs of hospitals and ensure they have enough blood for patients, 3,500 donors (500 p/day) are urgently needed this week into next week. When our blood inventory gets as low as it is now, it jeopardizes the health and safety of patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions. In some cases, hospitals are forced to postpone surgeries or delay critical treatments. Trauma victims from car accidents or shootings are at the highest risk, as their survival often depends on a healthy blood inventory. If these types of cases occur in the coming days, we might not have the blood needed to keep them alive. Patients undergoing organ transplants and battling cancer, and even mothers in labor could face treatment delays or complications due to a limited blood supply. ALL blood types are needed, but the need for type O blood is especially critical. If you do not know your blood-type, the best way to find out is to sign up to donate. As a reminder, WDL is hosting our next Blood Drive THIS FRIDAY August 16th from 9 am to 1pm. This is our chance to make a difference in the lives of so many who are in need! LOCATION: A3540 Conference Room 8701 W Watertown Plank Rd Milwaukee, WI 53226 MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT: Appointments are highly encouraged. Secure your spot by visiting https://lnkd.in/g2cbN9zm #WDL #DonateBlood #LabLifeline #EveryDropCounts #GiveLife #SaveLives #BeAHero #BringTheHeat

#DonateLifeMonth 💙💚 Despite the best efforts to detect and treat #KidneyDisease, patients sometimes still end up in #KidneyFailure. Dialysis, although life-sustaining, is very difficult to endure for a variety of reasons. The National Kidney Foundation provides an in-depth explanation of dialysis at: https://lnkd.in/gsjBHSb7 A #KidneyTransplant could take years to materialize, but #LivingDonations are also possible! 💙🧡 MMC nephrologist, Dr. Dipesh Maan, covers all of these topics in the following clip. 🐸 More information about living kidney donations, transplants, and matching can be found through the National Kidney Registry: https://lnkd.in/evftdQ9j #RemarkablePeople #RemarkableHealthcare

As we approach NF2 Awareness Day on May 22, Real people affected by NF2 are sharing their journeys, shedding light on the challenges they face, and inspiring hope for better understanding and treatments. These personal stories serve as powerful reminders of resilience, courage, and the importance of community. By sharing their experiences, these individuals contribute to a collective effort to improve the lives of NF2 patients and their families. We are each affected differently & people with NF2 are affected by Brain Tumours, Spine Tumours, Optical Tumours, Deafness, Blindness, Epilepsy, vocal chord paralysis, mobility problems, chronic pain, cataracts, facial palsy ... & much more! Today we meet Liene who was diagnosed with NF2 at 19 years old and her tumours were big at that time leading to increased pressure in her brain. "I was advised to get Avastin treatments. I was happy to get that help, because first when I was introduced to Avastin, they were a little bit reluctant because of the side effects on a young person like me. But this would mean that I’d get some more years without surgeries ... I moved to Norway, and was asked if I have plans of starting a family some day, and that was the first time they warned me about getting pregnant while on Avastin because it can cause severe damage to the baby" NF2, is a lifelong genetic condition, that weaves itself into the fabric of existence, unyielding and unrelenting. NF2 is for life, an unwavering companion. There is no cure, no magic wand to erase its presence. Instead, there is resilience, determination, and a shared journey among those who navigate its complexities Please consider donating to research, sharing your story & raising awareness. NF2 can be a daily battle. Physically, mentally and emotionally. But the psychological side can be more disabling. Daily battles with anxiety & depression. Help us #ENDNF2
As we approach NF2 Awareness Day on May 22, it’s heartwarming to see the efforts to raise awareness and support research for this condition. Real people affected by NF2 are sharing their journeys, shedding light on the challenges they face, and inspiring hope for better understanding and treatments. These personal stories serve as powerful reminders of resilience, courage, and the importance of community. We are each affected differently & people with NF2 are affected by Brain Tumours, Spine Tumours, Optical Tumours, Deafness, Blindness, Epilepsy, vocal chord paralysis, mobility problems, chronic pain, cataracts, facial palsy ... & much more! Today we meet Kim Whitlock who says "NF2 can be a daily battle. Physically I have mobility difficulties, SSD, facial paralysis & dizziness. But the psychological side can be more disabling. There's been times where I've fought daily battles with anxiety & depression. But NF2 has also made me a positive person & I try to prioritise myself & my health" NF2, is a lifelong genetic condition, There is no middle or ending to any of our stories. Surgery, radiosurgery, and chemotherapy—are the only options we have. Yet, they come at a cost. Their impact reverberates through the delicate pathways of nerves, often leaving behind scars of lost function. NF2 is for life, an unwavering companion. There is no cure, no magic elixir to erase its presence. "The U.S. Organ Donation and Transplantation system is renowned as the world’s most advanced and accomplished. We must insist that changes and improvements to this system be driven from evidence based practice and scientific study, rather than various looming and, sometimes, competing forms of self interest. We owe this to the patients and families we serve, whose lives and wellbeing hang in the balance." – Anne Murphy, MBA FACHE, SID&T Advisory Board Member We are excited to announce Anne Murphy, MBA FACHE, Consultant and former Chief Administrative Officer, Department of Learning Health Sciences University of Michigan Medical School, and Transplant Center Administrative Director at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, as an esteemed Advisory Board member of SID&T. Get to know the SID&T Advisory Board: https://lnkd.in/eAje75mx Coordination between OPO's and transplant centers saves lives.
