Every now and again a surveyor places a GCP for our flight crew on top of a wall. It's never a great spot. Why is that? The answer lies in the very purpose of GCPs. Ground Control Points are used to georeference our drone survey data and improve its accuracy. They are visible markers on the ground, captured in the drone's aerial imagery, and then used to align our data with the real world. Now, if we place a GCP on top of a wall, it could lead to inaccuracies. Here's why: **Visibility**: GCPs need to be clearly visible from the air. Walls, especially narrow ones - like in the picture below - may not provide enough surface area for clear visibility and identification of the GCP in the drone's imagery. **Elevation Changes**: Walls have a certain height, which means the elevation of a GCP placed on a wall would be different from the actual ground level. This discrepancy can introduce errors in our data. **Stability**: Walls are not always the most stable structures. Any movement or alteration to the wall (like construction work or erosion) could shift the GCP, affecting the consistency of our data across multiple surveys. Remember, the key to accurate drone surveying is the strategic placement of our GCPs. So, let's keep them off those walls and ensure our data is as accurate as it can be!
