I often receive job applications that don't do justice to the candidates' very real talents. That's a missed opportunity on both ends. The most frequent problem consists in providing a lot of generally interesting information that isn't directly relevant to me or to the job. Simply put, the application buries rather than highlights the candidate's strengths. My advice to job seekers is to reduce the amount of work on the receiver's end. The reason for that is that employers like myself are typically, genuinely desperate for help. We understand that a new hire cannot bring relief immediately: It's always an investment, which can only pay off over time. But if reading your application is already labor-intensive, you're sending the wrong message: that this relationship is going to be even more effort than average. That message can be broadcast unwittingly, when the application is scruffy or copy-paste; when it ignores key requests stated in the terms of reference; when it mentions Synaps only in passing; when it's fluid yet impersonal and reads like AI; and so forth. In short, you could see an application as the demonstration of your willingness and ability to quickly relieve and reinforce your new team. That means hewing closely to the terms of reference, highlighting the relevance of your strengths, transparently flagging any areas for improvement, showing you've looked up Synaps and done your homework, offering a vision to implement, even asking good questions. A good application reads like good work already in motion.
