The Cruise Tourism Workshop kicks off in East London today, shining a spotlight on the cruise tourism sector. With Africa accounting for less than 2% of global cruise passengers (source CLIA), there’s significant room to grow this industry to its full potential. These workshop aim to foster knowledge sharing between public and private stakeholders in the cruise tourism industry. The participants bring a wealth of insight and opportunities, working collaboratively to empower role players in this space. #SAT #CruiseTourismWorkshop2024

I had the pleasure of attending the panel moderated by my friend Ioannis Bras, and surrounded by amazimg speakers such as Alessandro Carollo and I can say it was one of the most original ones. Referred to the #cruisepositiveimpacts like its contribution to destination development. Cruise ships often visit remote or less-developed areas, bringing much-needed tourism revenue and stimulating local businesses. This can lead to improved infrastructure, enhanced amenities, and increased job opportunities for residents. Also cruise lines often collaborate with #localcommunities to offer training programs in various fields, including hospitality, tourism, and language skills. This not only helps to upskill the local workforce but also contributes to a more vibrant and sustainable tourism industry. From a financial perspective, the cruise industry is a major source of income for many countries and destinations. Cruise passengers spend money on a wide range of activities, from shopping and dining to excursions and entertainment, supporting businesses and creating jobs. Cruise industry also provides #employment opportunities for thousands of people worldwide. From ship officers and #crew members to shore-based staff, the industry offers a diverse range of jobs, contributing to economic stability and social well-being. Beyond these, many cruise lines offer volunteer programs for both crew and passengers, allowing them to contribute to local initiatives and make a positive impact. These programs can range from beach clean-ups and wildlife conservation efforts to educational outreach and cultural exchange. Furthermore, the cruise industry has been increasingly focused on educating passengers about responsible tourism practices. Recent initiatives include promoting sustainable consumption, reducing waste, and supporting local communities. By raising awareness and encouraging responsible behavior, the industry is helping to minimize its environmental footprint and maximize its positive impact on the destinations it visits. While the cruise industry offers numerous benefits, it is important to acknowledge that there are also challenges to be addressed. One such challenge is the need for better planning and management in popular destinations to ensure that tourism growth is sustainable and does not overwhelm local resources. Additionally, extending the cruise and tourism season in certain regions can help to spread the economic benefits more evenly throughout the year. By addressing the challenges and continuing to focus on responsible practices, the cruise industry can continue to make a significant contribution to the well-being of local cimmunities and the planet.
Extremely grateful to have joined the panel discussion “The Positive Economic and Social Impact of Cruise Tourism” moderated by Ioannis Bras at Seatrade Med in Malaga, where all panelists shared interesting perspectives, ideas and good practices to make cruise destinations better places for their local communities. Thank you Seatrade Cruise for your kind invite and for a fantastic 2-day event, see you all soon. #cruises #seatrade

🌍 Attending a global fair like World Travel Market (WTM) London is like taking a world tour in a matter of minutes. Each step takes you to a new culture, a new approach to travel, and a fresh perspective on how we connect globally. This year, I had the chance to dive into this whirlwind of countries, each showcasing their unique magic. The incredible size and attention to detail of Saudi Arabia’s stand alone was enough to make me feel like I’d crossed borders without leaving the fairground. But it's not just the size of the booths that impresses—it's the diversity in experiences, ideas, and innovations that these nations bring to the table. From tech-focused destinations redefining travel convenience to countries highlighting sustainable tourism, every corner of WTM reminded me how interconnected we are, and how travel continues to evolve beyond just moving from place to place. 👣 Each interaction, each handshake, each presentation was a chance to learn something new, bridging miles of distance in a single conversation. Whether you're on the lookout for new partnerships or simply here to see what's next in the world of travel, fairs like WTM are a must. Can't wait to see how these ideas take shape and influence the future of #tourism.
