In my former journalist roles at Tradeshow Week magazine and TSNN (Trade Show News Network), this type of article from the The New York Times questioning the value of convention centers came up over the years several times. Here it is again ... and again, in my personal opinion, this article does not represent our industry accurately. There is no 'secret' that convention centers often do not run at a huge profit. The main purpose of the center is to provide a world-class environment for attendees and exhibitors to come to do business at meetings and conventions in whatever city it is and spend money on, among other things, transportation, hotels, restaurants, entertainment, catering, audio-visual, local suppliers to build out the booths (including labor) and much more. The ECONOMIC IMPACT of each attendee and exhibitor has a tremendous trickle down affect to providing jobs to thousands of people (if not more) and supporting businesses in each city. For example, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority - LVCVA, in 2023, convention visitors spent $9.1 billion, supporting directly 43,910 jobs and indirectly over 67,000. Sure, that's Las Vegas and the No. 1 trade show city in the U.S. - but most EVERY city in the US that has a center and brings in meetings and conventions throughout the year supports numerous jobs and businesses in their communities. Just ask them how badly they all were affected when everything was shut down during the pandemic. So, my hope is maybe one day they will dig a little deeper when they write one of these articles questioning the value of convention centers.
