The Jaipur Foot is a groundbreaking innovation that has transformed the lives of millions of disabled individuals in India and across the globe. Its affordability stands in stark contrast to prosthetic options available in Western countries. While prosthetic legs in the U.S. can cost upwards of $1,000, the Jaipur Foot is priced at just $80, making it accessible to a far wider population. In his seminal work, *The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid*, C.K. Prahalad delves into the profound impact of the Jaipur Foot, highlighting its role in improving the lives of countless disabled people worldwide. The product is not just a triumph of design but also an exemplar of how frugality and simplicity can drive an organization’s success over the years. I came across the mention in his book while reading. Despite being an exemplary business model, the Jaipur Foot organization operates as an NGO that doesn’t charge patients a single penny. This model demonstrates how innovation and compassion can coexist, providing a sustainable solution that continues to empower and uplift those in need. #affordability #managementstyle #ckprahalad #innovation #successstory #Jaipurfoot

I recently came across an article in the Times of India that highlights a challenge faced by people with disabilities (PWDs) in India. The story focuses on Jagdish Lohar, a 51-year-old specially-abled teacher from Jodhpur. While Lohar's accomplishment is incredible - a 23-day, 6,200-kilometer motorcycle expedition from Jodhpur to Bengaluru - there's a key detail to note: he completed this journey on a specially modified motorcycle. The article reveals a significant issue - the lack of readily available disability-friendly vehicles in India. PWDs are often forced to modify existing vehicles to meet their needs, a process that can be expensive and inconvenient. Mr. Lohar's remarkable ride serves as a powerful message. It highlights the need for more accessible transportation options for people with disabilities in India. While we celebrate his achievement, it also sheds light on the existing challenges. Let's work towards a future where transportation is accessible to everyone! #DisabilityRights #TransportationForAll #MakingIndiaInclusive #TimesofIndia

The #TamilNadu government has taken a proactive step towards both urban development and women’s empowerment with the announcement of a new vehicle parking policy and the launch of "pink autos" in Chennai. Minister S. Muthusamy emphasized that the parking policy will address the growing need for designated parking areas, helping to alleviate congestion and streamline vehicle flow in the city, which has seen an exponential increase in traffic. This forward-thinking policy could lead to designated parking hubs and more organized street spaces, enhancing convenience for residents and visitors alike. In a parallel effort to improve women's safety and encourage entrepreneurship, Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan introduced the "pink autos" initiative. With GPS equipped autos driven by women and focused on women passengers, this service ensures safe transit, particularly around high-traffic areas like train and bus stations. The government’s support includes a 1 lakh subsidy for 200+ women drivers, along with facilitated access to loans from nationalized banks. This initiative not only enhances safety but also opens new economic avenues for women, empowering them as business owners in the transportation sector. These efforts by the Tamil Nadu government reflect a commitment to creating a more organized, secure, and inclusive city. Such initiatives inspire more individuals to come forward and contribute to making Chennai a safer and more accessible place for everyone. Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment MK Stalin

Yesterday, when I was traveling home by a crowded DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) bus, I witnessed an unsettling incident. An adult woman was threatening an elderly man with ₹500 fine for occupying a women's reserved seat. However, she offered that seat to a young girl, around 15 years old, to sit at the same spot who was fit and healthy. This is not the first time I've encountered such circumstances unfold. Nowadays, it’s becoming common for some women, especially the adult ones, to threaten males for claiming their seats even when those males are elders, facing any health challenges and more needy. Women especially in the DTC buses where their fare is also waived, sometimes assert their rights without considering the needs of others who may be more deserving, regardless of the gender. While women certainly have these reserved seats, it's important not to misuse this privilege. If someone else, irrespective of gender, is in great need due to their age, health, or other factors should be considered and kindly offer that seat to them. Women should exercise their right when you feel unsafe, have health concerns, unable to stand or may be other factors. Remember, rights are designed to empower women, providing safety, not to be used this as a tool for these unjust behavior and advantages. It's our responsibility to use our rights mindfully empathetically, and reflecting fairness in the society. #Delhi

Play based learning and print rich environment are important pillars of foundational learning. AKF is building capacities of Angawadi teachers, supervisors and ASHA didis across Bihar, UP and East Delhi.
When Madhu received support to enhance her skills and capacity as an Anganwadi worker, she didn't anticipate that her challenge of low attendance would improve dramatically by an impressive 60%! Today, Madhu not only engages actively with children but also supports adolescent girls, pregnant women and mothers. Madhu recently received a commendation and an award of Rs. 5000 from the District Magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. Like Madhu, we are working to strengthen the capacity of 3,061 Anganwadi and ASHA workers across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and East Delhi. #WomenInspire #IWD2024 Parivartan Aga Khan Foundation
