It's safety FIRST at the Sanbell family of companies. Nothing proves this more than our cool, smart, talented engineers who dedicate themselves to being leaders in their discipline. We would like congratulate Audrey Stoltzfus, PE for obtaining RSP2I certification and being the first in the state of Montana to do so. In 2018, The Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB) created the Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification to incentivize roadway safety education and establish a recognized level of practice and knowledge with regard to transportation safety. The RSP considers all safety-related disciplines (engineering, law enforcement, behavioral, and EMS communities) to design better, safer transportation systems. By stepping up from RSP Level 1 to Level 2 and adding an Infrastructure (I) emphasis, Audrey has proven that she's got the smarts and know-how to develop and implement surface transportation designs that will help to further reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our roads due to road crashes. With RSP certification recognizing road safety as a profession, who better to trust safe road design to than an RSP-certified transportation engineer? Well done, Audrey! #RoadSafety #SafeRoads #TrafficEngineering #VisionZero

A high-level international group looked at the challenges of Managing Impact and Vibration in the Maritime Workplace. With focus on Repeated Shock and Whole Body Vibration, presenters and discussions showed how much has changed and improved over the past decade. Some sectors now need to catch up quickly! NEXT GEN Workshop Lead, John Haynes, opened the session with a presentation highlighting ‘Effective RS & WBV Training for the Team.’ This has proved to be very successful for all involved, from Onshore Managers to Crews and Passengers. This latest edition of the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Workshop was run via Teams on 19 March. The programme proved to be highly relevant as shown by the excellent Feedback - See https://shorturl.at/mnFZ4 John McCorquodale, Inspector at Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) examined ‘Lessons Learned from Recent Accidents and Incidents on RIBs and Fast Craft.’ Tom Coe, Senior Engineer at Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) presented on ‘Mitigating the Risk to Crews - From Inflatable Rescue Craft to All Weather Lifeboats.’ Julian Morgan, MD of KPM Marine / Scot Seat took a deep dive into ‘Designing Helm, Crew and Passenger Seating.’ Besides the risks of Whole Body Vibration, he showed how vital Crash Protection can be at sea. James Glover, MD of Maritime Systems showed ‘The Benefits of Real Time Versus Historic Vibration Data for Decision Making.’ Accelerometers can be linked to a traffic light system showing green - amber - red. Joseph Salmon, MD of Salmon Power Sports demonstrated the value of ‘Ballast Systems to Improve Ride Quality and Reduce Slamming on Planing Vessels.’ Balancing heavy engines at the stern with movable water ballast at the bow. Dr Tom Gunston, Gunston Consulting / British and ISO Standards gave a thorough overview of ‘How Marine Suspension Seating Requirements and Specifications are Evolving.’ Rob Taylor, Code Vessel Lead at Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) looked at the challenges of developing rules and regulations for vessels. This included background to MGN 436 which provides ‘Guidance on Mitigating Against the Effects of Shocks and Impacts on Small Vessels.’ #NEXTGEN #ShockMitigation #WholeBodyVibration #RepeatedShock #RSandWBV #Boat #RIB #RHIB

This unique programme considers how different approaches to managing WBV - Whole Body Vibration - have evolved over the past decade. Especially how simple changes can be utilised to reduce the risk of injury for ALL people on boats. NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Workshop is via TEAMS on 19 March from 13.00 to 17.00 (UK). This timing works well for people to join the group from Europe and the United States. The theme is 'Managing Impact and Vibration in the Maritime Workplace'. INFO & REGISTER: https://shorturl.at/wyDQ8 PRESENTERS: John McCorquodale – Inspector, Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) Tom Coe – Senior Engineer, Royal National Lifeboat Institution RNLI Julian Morgan – MD, KPM Marine / Scot Seat Group JamesGlover – MD, Maritime Systems Joseph Salmon – MD, Salmon Power Sports Rob Taylor – Code Vessel Lead, Maritime and Coastguard Agency Dr Tom Gunston – Gunston Consulting / British and ISO Standards. Speed and waves are not the only factors, as impact and vibration are increasingly relevant issues in lower speed operations. Sessions will consider accident and injury reports. NEXT GEN Workshop Lead, John Haynes, 'Identifying genuine industry best practice is essential to reduce the incidence of injuries. Operators and industry need to share lessons learned. This includes boat driver training in waves, managing time and speed expectations for different vessels and conditions - plus improved passage planning.' It is important to understand the effects of both Repeated Shock (RS) and Whole Body Vibration (WBV). Suspension seating can be part of the solution, but with a growing range of options it is important to match seat performance with vessel type and expected use. Accelerometers are increasingly being used to measure vertical impacts and vibration. Other areas requiring attention include the damaging effects of fore-aft and lateral accelerations, especially when combined into vector forces. Topics include the background to MCA Guidance Notice MGN 436 - 'Whole Body Vibration: Guidance on Mitigating Against the Effects of Shocks and Impacts on Small Vessels.' #shockmitigation #wbv #rs #rswbv #wholebodyvibration #repeatedshock
