The Idea Hello There. Last time we introduced us with printf(“Hello World”); Today we will be talking a bit about our #idea. Our idea stems from personal experiences, in which we noticed that #psychotherapy is not using the possibilities of the 21st century. To give an example: Say you had an accident driving at night and developed a phobia. In therapy you would normally use exposure therapy to help treat your #phobia. This would mean your therapist would need to take a nighttime drive with you, but that is impossible. So instead, they can at maximum show you an image or a video of someone driving at night. At least that is the status quo. We at BraVR want to change that. Using high fidelity #VR we can bring any situation into the therapist office. But we can do more, combined with #biofeedback and data analytics, we can determine the stress level of the patient, identify stress focus points and perform diagnostics in real time. In later stages we plan to use procedural generation to create custom scenarios for each patient and adapt them to the patient’s responses in real time. This enables a more personalized therapy; it gives therapist the tools to see the patient’s responses & adept the therapy in real time and to quantify the therapy success. Therapy as I first learnt and practiced in, has always been talk therapy. As I learn more about the field, through my recent programme in Masters in Global Addiction and Rehabilitation Counselling at Namseoul University, I was exposed to technology-based treatment approaches. In the behaviour #addictions world, particularly #gaming, #gambling and #pornography, the use of VR has been advancing quickly to create more immersive and #addictive experiences for the users. To witness clinicians also using VR with CBT to work on #cue-exposure as part of the treatment programme helps to level up the playing field of combating addictions. While I have read about the usage in research and while the verdict is still pending on its effectiveness, I am heartened to see the helping profession catching up on the onslaught of technology from the user side. Day 3 : TODAY WE LOOK AT - THE INTEGRATION OF Ai AVATARS INTO MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT. At this time there are already AI-driven apps and virtual companions that are capable of providing basic emotional support, tracking mood patterns, and even engaging in therapeutic conversations. For individuals who might not have immediate access to human therapists, these AI systems offer a valuable resource, helping to bridge gaps in mental health care. These AI-driven apps do provide basic emotional support, track mood patterns, and guide users through self-help techniques like CBT. Whilst promising, these tools are still in their early stages and lack the deep empathy required for more complex needs that future Ai Avatars will provide. Clearly these AI avatars will transform mental health support going forward, by offering much deeper accessibility and assistance. However I do believe that the future of AI avatars in mental health support lies in enhancing emotional intelligence as I described in DAY 2 of this series, and integrating with human therapists, improving cultural sensitivity. We should be clear in our thinking that AI of any type in mental health support should remain a supplement to human professionals, ensuring comprehensive and personalised care for those in need. A recent pilot study led by Timothy Wilens at Massachusetts General Hospital has found promising evidence that a #VR-based intervention can help patients successfully complete medically assisted #opioid withdrawal. Here are the key takeaways: 1️⃣ The Challenge: Early dropout due to mood swings, tension, and cravings is a significant issue in opioid withdrawal treatment. Completing withdrawal management greatly reduces the risk of opioid overdose. 2️⃣ The Intervention: The 3D Therapy Thrive (3DTT) VR program includes relaxation, creativity, coping skills, and confidence-building modules, guided by “Aimee.” This study could revolutionize opioid withdrawal treatment by integrating VR into addiction medicine.
