As part of CEWIL/ECAIT Canada’s National Co-op & WIL Month, we will be highlighting the 9 types of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), as defined by CEWIL Canada. Today we will be talking about Co-operative Education (also known as Co-Op)! What is Co-operative Education? Co-op actually has two different models: Co-op alternating and Co-op internship. Co-op alternating consists of alternating academic terms and paid work terms. Co-op internship consists of several co-op work terms back-to-back. In both models, work terms provide experience in a workplace setting related to the student’s field of study. The number of required work terms varies by program; however, the time spent in work terms must be at least 30% of the time spent in academic study for programs over 2 years in length and 25% of time for programs 2 years and shorter in length. Benefits of Co-ops: - Application of classroom knowledge: Students get to put their academic learning to the test in real-world situations, solidifying their understanding and developing practical skills. - Development of essential workplace skills: Students gain valuable experience in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management, skills which are highly sought-after by employers. - Exploration of career options: Students test-drive different fields and companies before graduation, helping them discover their ideal career path. - Resume & Career Development: Co-op experience demonstrates a student's initiative, work ethic, and commitment to their field, giving them a competitive edge in the job market and providing valuable references. 💫A Co-op program - short for cooperative education - is an educational initiative that integrates classroom learning with practical work experience, offering your students the opportunity to gain real Canadian work experience while they study. 🤌Benefits: 🌐Networking This is the perfect chance to expose students to a network of industry connections which can lead to future work opportunities inside or outside of Canada. 👔Professional development Participating in co-op programs offers prospective students the chance to develop new practical skills beyond the classroom in one of the world's foremost economies. 📝Attractive Resume Practical international work experience earned through a co-op program improves the credibility of the student’s resume, increasing their competitiveness in the global job market. 💵Financial Advantage Many co-op programs in Canada offer paid work terms, allowing international students to earn an income while gaining experience in their field. 🔍Knowledge of chosen career path Students can get insights into the career paths and understand the dynamics, tools, and expectations by collaborating with professionals in their chosen fields. 👉What's the difference between co-op programs and internships?👇 Both co-op programs and internships are great paths to learning and acquiring practical skills. However, the structure, duration, and overall experiences differ. Co-op programs are organized, integrated educational programs that alternate study and employment placements during the program. Students are placed for a specific duration in both classroom-based learning and practical applications, gained through theory and skills within a professional setting. Internships are temporary employment with professional hands-on experience in specific roles. These are not usually part of school programs, like co-op programs. 📌Intrigued to learn more❓ Apply NOW through @prime56consultingltd for a Diploma course with CO-OP @prime56consultingltd Canada 🇨🇦 📩⤵️You can Send your documents to us via edurecruit@prime56.com or send a DM, our representative will guide you on the next step to take. #Prime56consultingltd #canada🇨🇦

The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) Education Committee invited me to participate in a Roundtable Discussion (RTD) held on Wednesday, 12 December 2024, at Shangri-La at The Fort. The RTD was in preparation for an upcoming MAP Workshop on “Building a Stronger Workforce through Structured Internship.” The RTD participants included colleagues from MAP, academic institutions, industry associations, and government agencies. Here are some of the thoughts I shared with the group: The need to bridge the gap between academic learning and the practical demands of the workplace has never been more urgent. As the Philippines aspires to be a competitive player in the global economy, the role of structured internship programs in shaping our future workforce becomes paramount. Internships are not just a bridge but a transformative experience that prepares young people for real-world challenges while fostering innovation and economic growth. Internships offer students the opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into practical skills. By working in real-world environments, they develop essential competencies such as teamwork, communication, and adaptability. These experiences also enhance their employability, setting them apart in a highly competitive job market. For industries, internships represent a strategic investment. They create a tailored pipeline of talent that addresses specific needs, helping to address skills gaps and drive productivity. For the nation, the benefits are even more extensive—structured internships help reduce youth unemployment, foster innovation, and sustain economic growth. Yet, the absence of a well-defined framework can make internships inconsistent and less impactful. I hope MAP, through the Workshop, can proactively redefine academe-industry-government partnerships and develop structured internship programs that are inclusive, sustainable, and transformative. To ensure that internships align with national development goals, we must focus on sectors that promise the greatest impact. My proposed priority sectors are: IT-BPM, healthcare, agriculture and agri-business, manufacturing and engineering, tourism and hospitality, education, and public service. Through internships, we must nurture the next generation of educators and civil servants committed to equity and excellence in serving the nation. The urgency of implementing a structured internship program cannot be overstated. Our youth are not just the future of this nation; they are its present. By equipping them with the skills, experiences, and confidence to excel in their chosen fields, we are investing in a stronger, more prosperous Philippines.

🚀 Fall vs. Summer Intake: Which is Better for Your Study Abroad Plans? 🌍 Deciding on the right intake for your study abroad journey can be a game changer! Here's a quick comparison to help you make an informed choice: 🍂 Fall Intake (September) More Programs: Fall typically offers a wider range of courses and programs. Larger Cohorts: Networking opportunities are vast, with many students starting in the fall. Internship Opportunities: More chances to land summer internships before graduation. Longer Preparation Time: Ideal if you need more time to prepare or gather funds. 🌞 Summer Intake (May/June) Less Competition: Smaller class sizes mean more personalized attention and less competition. Accelerated Programs: Some summer intakes offer faster courses, helping you finish your degree sooner. Milder Climate: If you're not a fan of cold winters, a summer start gives you a gentler transition. Internship Timing: Depending on the country, securing internships may be more challenging due to off-cycle timing. ✨ Which One Should You Choose? If you're looking for variety, networking, and a structured academic calendar, Fall is for you. For those who prefer smaller class sizes, quicker programs, and potentially earlier graduation, Summer could be your best bet. In the end, it’s all about aligning your personal, academic, and professional goals with the right intake. Good luck! 🌟 #StudyAbroad #FallIntake #SummerIntake #HigherEducation #CareerPlanning

Investing in interns helps companies build a loyal talent pipeline
https://lnkd.in/ecGBj-Rj I am thrilled to share my article on how internships are an excellent way for organizations to build a pipeline of talent and help identify individuals who demonstrate passion, perseverance, competencies and curiosity. It is thanks to great employer partnerships such as those with Bombardier, Vffice, AtkinsRéalis and Nestlé Health Science who have revealed invaluable insights on how to engage interns to then become permanent employees. Top employers like them invest time and energy in their internship programs and the ROI is countless. Recruiting student interns makes good business sense. I'm also proud that we heard the voice of a student during their journey in the Concordia University - Institute for Co-operative Education where they learn, grow and assess different organizations to determine their careers and future professional home. Some key tips in building a successful internship: *Assign Meaningful Work *Focus on Culture *Incorporate regular check-ins & feedback *Create a sense of belonging *Provide training Thank you to Marco Beaulieu, Savannah Carvalho, Vince Hua, Julie Lavallee and Josephine L. (Josie) Scalia for sharing their expert advice and experience. #experientiallearning #cooperativeeducation #studentinterns Concordia Alumni Concordia University #workintergratedlearning CEWIL/ECAIT Canada #Concordia50 #careers CACEE / ACSEE #ROI

#Building #Better #Internships – Insights from Strada Education Foundation (SEF) Research Problem Statement: SEF's study explores how internships serve as a crucial bridge between education and employment. The research addresses gaps in internship access, quality, and equity, examining barriers that hinder students from fully benefiting from these opportunities Key Findings: 1. Internships as Career Connectors: 96% of students engaged in internships to connect their education to career opportunities, with 70% aiming to gain relevant experience and 26% exploring career interests. 2. High Satisfaction Rates: 74% of students were extremely satisfied with their internship experience, which was linked to strong #mentorship, supervisor support, and opportunities to develop key skills. 3. Financial Barriers: One-third of internships were unpaid, and many students cited financial challenges such as transportation costs and missed wages from other jobs, making it harder to participate. 3. Demographic Differences: First-generation and minority students faced significant obstacles, including financial challenges and a lack of access to internships in their field of studies. Recommendations: For Educators and Institutions ♤ Use Internships Intentionally: Develop structured learning plans and skill-development goals tailored to each internship, providing students with clear targets. Faculty advisors should play a more active role in facilitating these plans and guiding students through the process of securing meaningful internships. Coordinate Cross-Campus Efforts: Foster a more holistic, student-centred approach to internships. This will ensure that students’ experiences are aligned with their broader academic and career goals. ♤ For Employers: • Embed Internships in #TalentStrategy: Invest in paid internships to ensure equitable access and to attract a diverse pool of candidates. Employers who view internships as a key talent pipeline will help create a workforce that is more representative and skilled. • Engage in Co-Designing Internship Programs: Work alongside educational institutions to develop industry-specific internship models. • Strengthen Supervision and Mentorship: Provide clear roles and responsibilities for interns, ensuring accountability and progress through well-defined supervision. At Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) , we are taking a proactive role in shaping Malaysia’s National Internship Policy (NiP), with #MyNext as the national internship platform. We have already institutionalised best practices such as paid internships, industry-academia collaboration, and mentorship programs, to create an inclusive, equitable and structured internship ecosystem that benefits both students and employers through #MySIP and #ILHAMKESUMA, making internships an essential part of the transition from #EducationtoEmployment.
