When I started Jayaram Law in 2009, I found myself at a crossroads: I really enjoyed the practice of law, yet I found the culture surrounding it uninspiring and out of touch. Over the past 15 years, we’ve cultivated a company that not only offers top-tier legal services, but also pioneers legal technology, all while deliberately distancing ourselves from the traditional legal industry. Here's a few lessons I've gleaned from this (unconventional?) approach: Shared Values Are Fundamental: Much of business revolves around shared values. We took a significant gamble early on, aligning our brand with the universe of clients we desired to work with, rather than with other brands in the legal space. This alignment wasn’t just strategic; it was authentic, stemming from our genuine belief in our proposition. Demonstrating to our clients and potential clients that our values resonated with theirs laid the foundation for a sustainable brand. Embrace Your Differences: Amplifying what sets you apart can enhance your impact. Leaning fully into our unique characteristics fortified our brand, sharpened our vision, and told a compelling story. We're all in, all the time. Acceptance of Alienation: You will inevitably alienate certain audiences and clients by taking an unproven path. Being true to who you are and amplifying your differences will push away some seeking the status quo, the traditional option, the safe bet. Sharing values is a reciprocal process, so if someone doesn’t genuinely believe in what you’re building, then representing them likely isn’t the best fit.
