#TBT to on some of my learnings at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity Lions ➡️LEARNING 1: AI IS NOT A FAD ANYMORE From the various talks I attend to and discussions I could have on the Croisette, AI was yet again the key word. Just like Vivatech, it was front and center. With a key learning: we are now in the years of implementation with a big question behind "what are we going to use it for?" A new revolution is on its way, its inevitable, and businesses need to embrace it ➡️LEARNING 2: SO MUCH PROGRESS ON SOCIAL IMPACT Cannes is very much about Good and Impact. Yet, impact at Cannes mostly means social impact. And that's amazing news, with the creative and innovative minds working at improving human lives, reducing inequalities, creating a fairer society. With a level of maturity on the matter that is quite impressive, paving the way to pretty advanced solutions and inspiring cases. ➡️LEARNING 3: SUSTAINABILITY HAS LOST ITS SEAT AT THE TABLE What obviously struck me is that sustainability was not that much discussed. Not a lot of event or discussions around this crucial matter, in a place where so many actors have so much to do. Big kudos to ACT Responsible for supporting this message in the Act Reponsible Hall (very proud to have shared that space wit you) and also poke to Jellyfish and Google for their dedicated talk at the Contagious Villa. ➡️LEARNING 4: YET CREATIVITY ALWAYS PREVAIL What made me smile though is when seeing so many campaigns and even prices that were given to sustainability oriented campaign. And not only in the dedicated category (SDG or Sustainable Innovation, poke to Google's campaign Contrails ) but also in the "regular" categories (poke to "The Long Lasting Reviews" from Darty, Publicis and my friend Bénédicte Pelletan ). So glad to see that my family of heart (creatives and tech) is concerned about the challenge at hand and working hard in designing ideas that are helping our society to go to the right direction. It's probably great news to see that if we are not talking about it, we are actually acting upon it. Way to go! 👊🏾Overall, I left Cannes with high hopes and energy. Two very important #AI Races are being run in the fast lane. Which race do you belong to and how are you pacing your run ? !! At the ongoing Gartner #ITSymposium in Barcelona, light was shed on 2 distinct #AI races that are being run in parallel: 1. Tech Vendor Race- Where technology vendors are relentlessly innovating and baking in AI into their highly hyped technologies 2. CIO Race- Where CIOs of all enterprise types, at varying degrees, are racing to adopt AI to get ahead. While the first race is the race to belong to the ecosystem and to stay at the forefront of it, the second is a race to deliver AI outcomes safely and at scale. Both these AI races are intertwined. One is a producer, the other a consumer. Together, both are innovators where the latter is the source of use cases and the former incorporates AI elements to address them. The stakes of both these races are high as 74% CEOs say AI is the technology that will most impact their industry. This is a significant leap from 59% in early 2024, and 21% in 2023. (Gartner survey) While CEOs are very sanguine of AI's potential, 47% of CIOs say that AI has not met their AI expectations. (Gartner survey) As #GenAI teeters on the edge of Peak of Inflated Expectations in Gartner's Hype Cycles and remains poised to slide into the Trough of Disillusionment, it's important the stakeholders of the above two races, the vendors and the enterprises get together, aided and consulted by the IT SIs to make the most of AI wave and truly realize the AI promise in terms of Business, Technology and Behavioural outcomes. It is two weeks plus since the 2 day AI-Days 2024 event, and the buzz continues. The post event interactions, networking and feedback are ongoing. With 2000 delegates, 175 volunteers, 150 ambassadors, 70 plus speakers, 8 key notes, multiple focused tracks, panel discussions, workshops, a Master Class and a hackathon - not to mention a foot-tapping, high decibel cultural show on day one - the event was hectic and had active participation. The participants were from a wide cross section - Govt agencies, research institutes, tech companies, IT services companies, academia, coders, startups, tech evangelists and students. The opening session, where affected farmer families occupied the centre stage and saw for themselves how AI can help make a difference, set the stage for the rest of the event. Reflecting, these are my takeaways. - AI is topical and of interest to everyone. This is validated by the fact that the event was over the long Easter weekend and still had such good participation. - Prof Gaurav Raina's keynote on the #UntoldUPIStory touched a chord in everyone and underlined how technology can really make a difference. It resonated so well with the theme of the conference, #AI4Society - There are alternate ways to build datasets and models - the Telugu ASR example showcased at the event and the background on how it was built in a short period of time - was telling proof that innovative minds are not constrained by lack of budgets. - The collaborative spirit demonstrated was amazing, Government bodies, T-Hub, tech companies, educational institutes and individuals came forward and agreed to collectively accelerate the use of AI - The large number of participants who came forward to sign up to work on future projects was encouraging, to say the least. - Aligned to the theme of the event, multiple projects were identified even as the event unfolded and there are active discussions on executing them. This is definitely not a one-off annual event. It is evolving into a series of activities, wave after wave, each one as exciting, to ensure #AI4Society is for real. Watch the space!
