There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Kankawa Nagarra was announced as the winner of the 2024 SOUNDMERCH Australian Music Prize for her debut album ‘Wirlmarni’. The 80-year-old Walmatjarri Elder, teacher and human rights advocate’s heartfelt album captivates listeners with its blend of Aboriginal Australia blues, country and gospel styles, infused with her personal story. The record has been thousands of years in the making, containing the sounds of the nature and people in Wangkatjungka, a remote Aboriginal community in northern Western Australia. Congratulations to Kankawa Nagarra, the shortlisted artists and all of the records (over 600!) which were submitted to the Australian Music Prize. We’re so proud to support the Australian Music Prize through their Amp’d Up campaign, to amplify the stories of our artists and celebrate Australian music.
