🚫 Don't Be That Person - Don't Click Ignore or Enable This Option 🔒 Two Security Features To Check in Power BI 1. 🖥️ Privacy Levels in Power BI Desktop Even seasoned Power BI users can be guilty of ignoring the Privacy Levels setting within "Data source settings" of PBI Desktop. You know that "annoying" prompt that pops up? The one saying, "The privacy levels are used to ensure data is combined without undesirable data transfer..." usually during a Merge or similar transformation in Power Query? Don’t just click “Ignore Privacy Levels” or make everything "Public", only to make it work. Doing so can expose private data to other sources, which might lead to unintended data leaks. Here's a quick rundown of the three Privacy Levels. - Private: Does not fold into other sources, even private. 🔒 - Organisational: Can folds into private and other organisational sources, but not public ones. 🏢 - Public Data: Can fold into all other data sources. 🌐 Be mindful and set these correctly to ensure your data stays secure. To further understand this, check out Query Folding! 2. ⚠️ Publish to Web – Is this on? The second thing I would like you to check now, or if you don’t have access to the Tenant Settings in the Admin Portal, share this with your Fabric Admin so they can: - Check if the "Publish to Web" option is enabled. - See if anything has been published, and by whom. Look into it! This is one of those settings I would LOVE to not find causing issues anymore, especially since I believe Microsoft automatically disabled this option a while back and I think its been communicated well. But, surprise, surprise, surprise! In Short, turn this off! If needed, create a security group and limit who can publish to the web. Nope, unfortunately, this is not a free way to share reports - we gotta pay some money for those licenses. But it is a free way to share private data with the public web. Even if a link is needed, it's still accessible online. #PowerBI #DataPrivacy #DataSecurity

Create Roles: Start by setting up roles in Power BI Desktop, just like with Row-Level Security (RLS). 🛠️ 2. Add OLS Rules: Use XMLA endpoints available with Power BI Premium to configure OLS rules. Tools like TMSL, PowerShell, SSMS, or Tabular Editor can help. 🖥️🔗 3. Permissions: Define permissions as None (no access) or Read (full access). Ensure table access isn't set to None when restricting specific columns. 🔓📄 ⚙️ Steps to Set Up OLS: - Use XMLA endpoint APIs or client tools to manage OLS rules. - Publish the model to the Power BI service and map security groups or user accounts to roles. 🚀🌐 🤔 Considerations: - Error messages might appear if users attempt to access restricted objects, which can be confusing.
