Malta's public sector just got their 4th MRI. This time in Gozo. Have you ever stopped to think what an MRI does? How it works? Imagine the nuclei of atoms as tiny magnets. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, like the one used in MRI machines, these "tiny magnets" align themselves with the field, much like a compass needle aligns with Earth's magnetic field. This is the first step in creating an MRI image, similar to setting up several swings (each swing represents a nucleus) in a playground (the magnetic field). Resonance: Pushing the Swings Now, to make the nuclei "swing" or resonate, we apply a radiofrequency (RF) pulse, akin to giving the swings a push. The frequency of this push has to match the natural frequency of the swings (nuclei) for them to swing higher, which is the principle of resonance. Just like an adult pushing a child on a swing at just the right moment to make the swing go higher, the RF pulse is timed perfectly to affect the nuclei.Expanding to many children on swings, if each swing represents different types of nuclei (for example, hydrogen, which is abundant in water and fat in the human body), by "pushing" them at their unique frequencies, we can make them all "swing" without interfering with each other. Reading the Energy: Listening to the Swings. After the RF pulse stops, the nuclei return to their original state, much like a swing gradually comes to a stop after you stop pushing. As they do, they emit energy in the form of radio waves. This is analogous to listening to the sounds of the swings as they slow down, with each swing (nucleus type) making a slightly different sound. An MRI scanner "listens" to these signals with antennas. Reconstructing the Image: Understanding the Playground The signals picked up by the MRI scanner are incredibly complex, coming from millions of nuclei "swinging" at slightly different frequencies and amplitudes. Through sophisticated computer algorithms, these signals are translated into an image, much like creating a detailed map of our playground with the positions, movements, and interactions of all the swings. The Flexibility of MRI The beauty of MRI lies in its flexibility. By adjusting the magnetic field and RF pulses, we can "tune in" to different types of nuclei or change the way the swings respond. This allows us to create a variety of images that highlight different tissues, fluids, or pathological conditions within the body. It's akin to changing the playground setup or the way we interact with the swings to reveal different aspects of the playground. By using a magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to make atomic nuclei resonate and then listening to the energy they emit as they return to their normal state, we can create detailed images of the inside of the body. This flexibility makes MRI an incredibly powerful tool in medical imaging, capable of revealing both the structure and function of various body parts in remarkable detail.

VIDEO. Most, if not all, hospitals create, formulate, and put together an annual or regular bi-annual, 5 year Strategic Plan. In that regard, they are not different from large and major corporations. I have read a number of hospital strategic plans and watched a number of videos they produced. They talk about about the meat and vision of their plan. Who puts together these plans? Well, some hospitals do have a hospital strategist officer, who in consultation and discussion with hospital officials and management stakeholders prepares it. In others, it's a combination of hospital officers and staff. Here is one hospital's video about their strategic plan.
