What is 3D visual spatial intelligence in medicine? A skill that we all require (not just surgeons). It's a complex combination of skills that requires both psychomotor skill and rapid interpretation of a 2D image, converting it to 3D (in your head) and then making an adjustment. Appreciating this skill (and one that I have struggled with as a resident and continually improving as a surgeon), how do we teach and learn this without irradiating ourselves and our team? #3DPC2024 #Finalist "Materialise´s crucial role in the world’s first whole eye transplant" @materialisenv NYU Langone Health Hospital BELGIUM 3D technologies developed by Materialise played a pivotal role in the world’s first-ever successful eye transplant. The landmark surgery, performed at NYU Langone Health Hospital in NY also included a face transplant. Materialise developed a virtual pre-operative 3D plan of the surgery and 3D printed various custom medical instruments. The operation lasted 21 hours and was supported by clinical engineers from Materialise. Materialise clinical engineers worked closely with the team at NYU Langone Health to develop a virtual plan based on CT scans, to enable surgeons to perform the surgery faster and more accurately. During the surgery, personalized cutting instruments and bone models were used, which were 3D printed by Materialise. These instruments ensure that the bone fragments can be positioned faster and with extreme precision.
