Let’s walk the talk on diversity and inclusion for real. I had the great pleasure to discuss important questions with the Volvo Group V-EAGLE network for LGBTQAI+ members and allies earlier this week. In a nutshell: 👉 Why should LGBTQAI+ diversity matter in the workplace? - Because everyone should feel safe to come to work as who they are, feel safe at work, respected, and be included. 👉 In 2024, do you think our society has reached full inclusion in the workplace already? - No, unfortunately, in my view more work on this is needed. 👉 What tips can you give to people to become more inclusive colleagues and leaders? - Let’s respect everyone for who they are and include them. It is as simple as that. 👉 LGBTQAI+ people who don’t feel comfortable with being “out” in the workplace, what do you want to say to them? - Sometimes I am sure this can be easier said than done. With full respect for everyone who is not ready, or who does not want to, coming out is a personal choice. But if you want to come out and feel more ready, look for other members and allies – there are many to connect with. And join the LGBTQAI+ community in your workplace, to feel supported but also to support others. I would say that this could be a good starting point. 👉 You have consistently attended the Pride parade in Gothenburg every year since 2017. What was it that made you join the first West Pride parade, and what made you come back every year? - For me as a person, and as a leader, diversity and inclusion really matter. So, when I joined the Volvo Group in 2017, it was very natural for me to also join the West Pride parade in Gothenburg. Since then, many of my colleagues in the Volvo Group Executive Board have joined me. And we can see the number of LGBTQAI+ members and allies in the Group growing every year. 🌈 We regard diversity as a strategic advantage, because diverse teams with an open and inclusive culture are more successful. As a global company with brands and markets all over the world, we need #diversity of perspectives, to offer the best #products to our #customers. 🏆 For the second time and to show the importance of this issue, we awarded the “Gender Equity Award 2024” to departments within Volkswagen AG. The colleagues pushed this matter and did remarkable progress. Among this years awardees are Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and the finance-departments of Volkswagen Group and Volkswagen passenger cars. 💬 Arno Antlitz, CFO & COO of Volkswagen Group: “An award is not only about recognition; it also serves as a mission. This is especially true in gender equity, where our Group still has significant progress to make. Therefore, I am delighted that the Volkswagen Group's and Brand’s Finance divisions have been awarded internally for its efforts in this area.” 💬 Antlitz adds: “Together, we have increased the proportion of women in management in our divisions by ten percent compared to last year. One in five of our managers is now a woman. To put it bluntly, this is not a cause for celebration. However, it provides a good momentum for us to keep improving.”

🌈 Reflections on a Remarkable Journey 🌈   Last week, I had the opportunity to share a conversation about women in the Auto industry. In my speech, I explored the essence of what it truly means to foster an inclusive environment—where diversity is not just a metric to achieve, but a mosaic of perspectives, experiences, and talents that enrich our collective endeavours.   Diversity means: We are all different. Inclusion means: You are all welcome. Belonging Means: I am being heard.   "Diversity speaks to who is on the team, but inclusion focuses on who is influencing the game," a mantra that I believe encapsulates our mission to cultivate meaningful change. One of the most personal moments shared was the liberation felt in being true to oneself, a sentiment echoed in the outpouring of support and connection from many of you.   With women comprising a significant portion of our workforce and leadership, we're demonstrating that inclusivity is not just the right thing to do but the smart thing to do.   I’m a firm believer that: You can't be it if you can't see it.   This phrase reminds us of the profound importance of representation and visibility. It highlights that for us to aspire, achieve, and thrive, we must first see others like us in roles and spaces where we aim to be. It underscores the value of diversity, the power of inclusion, and the essence of belonging—three pillars that are critical not just in our workplaces but in every aspect of our lives.   The outpouring of support and engagement from everyone who attended, and the conversations sparked, have been overwhelmingly positive. It's clear that our collective efforts towards diversity, inclusion, and belonging are not just necessary but vital for the future we envision.   Thank you for joining me in this conversation, for your commitment to change, and for being part of a community that values every individual's contribution.   Let's continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and belonging, not just in our workplaces but in every aspect of our lives.   Together, we are stronger, more innovative, and more resilient. America's rapidly polarising political landscape is having a dangerous trickle-down effect into corporate culture. The EDI backlash is gaining momentum and I'm staggered at how a big, successful brand appears to have dropped its EDI commitments in response to an attack on X last week. Global automaker Toyota has called a halt to its sponsorship of LGBTQ+ events and has announced its plans to "narrow our community activities to align with STEM education and workforce readiness". They have also joined a steady stream of companies who over the past few months have revoked their participation in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Corporate Equality Index. The thing is, Toyota's decision seems to have been precipitated by an attack on X by conservative activist, Robby Starbuck. Starbuck's post opened with "it's time to expose Toyota" and went on to detail a range of accusations around their support of LGBTQ+ initatives alongside a list of vague statements such as "woke DEI trainings" and "a total committment to DEI policies" as reasons to take a stand against the brand, offering direct contact details for some of Toyota's senior executives and providing guidelines on how people can "become a whistleblower against a woke company". This raises red flags and alarm bells for me. Of course, vote with your wallet and buy from brands that you're happy to hand your money over to. But when a brand finds itself so dramatically moving away from initiatives that support diversity - seemingly in direct response to being called out on a public platform, you have to wonder how deep their commitment was to being with. It's not just a war of words or strategies. These decisions will have a negative impact on Toyota's workforce. Shape Talent Ltd's Three Barriers research uncovered some alarming statistics when it comes to intersectionality and equality. LGBTQ+ women experience greater barriers to their career progression, on average. The same goes for women who are Black, or who have a disability. So a big global brand just suddenly scrapping any programmes around diversity is going to impact the cohort of LGBTQ+ women in their organisation. A reduced company focus on EDI is also going to effect women's career progression in their organisation as well as their mental health and wellbeing. This in turn will negatively impact organisational performance. After all, you can't perform at your best if you feel like a second-class citizen. And Toyota aren't alone. According to this article, the past few months has seen a mounting number of brands reversing their EDI initatives. Big, global, powerful brands like John Deere, Harley-Davidson, Lowe’s, and Ford. 💡Respect for people. That’s it. That’s the “tweet”. But it also happens to be one of Toyota’s guiding principles, and pillars that have buttressed this innovative company for nearly 100 years. So I’d say it’s more than lip/tweet service. 🏳️🌈 As an ally, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the colorful tapestry of Pride Month unfold at Toyota. Here are my reflections: 🚘 Unity Beyond Differences: Pride Month reminds us that unity transcends political boundaries. Just as Toyota vehicles come in various models, colors, and features, so do people. Our shared humanity binds us together, regardless of our beliefs. 👂🏽Respecting Individual Journeys: Like a well-engineered transmission, acceptance shifts gears smoothly. As an ally, I respect each person’s unique journey. Pride Month encourages us to listen, learn, and appreciate diverse perspectives. 🗺️ Roads Less Traveled: Just as Toyota explores innovative roads in automotive technology, we can explore empathy and understanding. Supporting LGBTQ+ colleagues doesn’t compromise our values; it enriches our workplace and community. 👷🏿♀️Safety and Inclusion: Safety features in our cars protect passengers. Similarly, creating an inclusive environment safeguards everyone. Let’s ensure that our workplaces and communities are safe spaces for all, regardless of sexual orientation or identity. 🌉Driving Forward: Pride Month isn’t about politics; it’s about celebrating love, resilience, and authenticity. As an ally, I’m committed to driving forward—to a world where acceptance bridges gaps and compassion fuels progress. 🙏🏽Thank you to my team and our strategic partners that help us to continuously improve in this area.
