Today is the first day of spring. During this season, the weather warms up and we start to head outside more. There are several patents related to spring, and some are especially helpful with the warmer temperatures. This invention is perfect for a spring picnic. Eileen Trinkner was granted a patent in 1982 for her combined picnic bag and tablecloth (U.S. Patent No. 4337812). Her invention allows for efficient organization and transportation of silverware, plates, food and drink, while also serving as a table cover. Another invention perfect for a picnic is insect repellent. U.S. Patent No. 5589181A was issued in 1996 to Franz Bencsits. Spring is also the time for blooming flowers, and blooming flowers need water. Peter H. Seckel invented the kink resistant hose for spraying water (U.S. Patent No. 5682925A). The hose has connector end fittings and displaced internal ribs to prevent compression or kinking. 🌱✨ Discover the magic of Air Layering! This wonderful method helps you grow new roots on a stem still attached to the parent plant. Perfect for creating clones of your favorite plants! 🌿🌳 👉 Selection of trees and branches: Choose disease-free tree branches that are 1.5-2 years old or pencil-thick branches from mature trees for grafting. Select branches of similar thickness to a pencil from the original plant and graft just below a knot in the stem. 👉 Air Layering method: 1. Select two-year-old trees for grafting, or choose trees with branches as thick as a pencil if two-year-old trees are not available. 2. When selecting branches for grafting to produce saplings, it is crucial to pick those with knots, as not every branch of the tree is appropriate for this process. 3. Cut away the bark from the part below the branch's knot using a sharp knife, ensuring it is trimmed to a size of 3-4 cm. 4. Create a clay paste by mixing 3 parts of clay soil with organic material and 1 part of decomposed dung or leaves. Add water gradually until a paste is achieved, adjusting the water level as necessary. The soil should be damp and exhibit a slightly solid yet pliable texture when compressed by hand. 5. Apply this soil to the branch and wrap it in polythene. It is important to secure the wrapped polythene with twine to prevent it from shifting on the branch. Ensure that the soil enclosed in the tied polythene remains moist and does not dry out. 6. After three months, the roots will begin to grow out. If the roots are large and brown, it is recommended to trim the branch. In this situation, the sapling should be kept inside the polythene and watered as required. After two weeks of this process, the sapling should be planted in the tub's soil. #AirLayering #PropagationMethod #PlantPropagation #PlantCare #GardeningTips #PlantLovers

Peony Power - This show stopping queen of flowers doesn’t bloom for long. Here are some tips to make her last up to three months! 1. Cut your flowers when the buds begin showing some color and are soft like a marshmallow. 2. Store them dry with leaves stripped off. This reduces water loss. 3. Wrap them completely, stem to bud, in clear plastic wrap, sealing both ends. 4. Store horizontally in a frost-free refrigerator away from fruits and veggies. 5. When you are ready to use them, remove from the refrigerator, cut the stems and place in tepid water in a cool area. Once hydrated they should bloom for about a week. Try these tips. You’ll be tickled pink and arranging peonies all spring and summer long! Photograph taken by a member of Albemarle Garden Club #peony #flowercare

🍅🐛Did you know that all of those tomato hornworms you see on your tomato plants are planning to borrow into the ground and turn into THIS? 🤯 I was lucky enough to catch this tomato hornworm in the act of digging down into the ground. A few weeks later I excavated and the big green caterpillar that I saw dig down had turned into this! Here in the Napa Valley, we have two different types of moths that are considered to be “tomato hornworms.” Last year hummingbird moths seem to be everywhere. They are pretty mesmerizing when they visit your garden. 🧚🏽 The other tomato hornworm is commonly called a tobacco hornworm. That moth is generally considered to be a lot less beautiful but still usually serves a pretty important purpose in our environment. If you do find hornworms on your vegetables this summer, consider moving the worms onto one of your native plants and letting it continue its lifecycle. Moths are important pollinators so consider moving hornworms onto native plants.. or fuchsia, apple, grape, clarkia, purslane, etc.
