Overall, Black, Latinx, and Native American households pay a higher percentage of their income in utility costs and bear a steeper energy burden than white households. These communities also bear the brunt of pollution from the fossil fuel industry as well as the worsening harms of the climate crisis. To promote energy justice and a sustainable, livable future, we must fundamentally transform the energy system. This means going beyond simply increasing participation in the current utility regulatory framework; we must also change decision-making structures and center the needs of those most impacted to truly advance energy justice. 📝Learn more and download our utility regulation guide here: https://buff.ly/4gj8htt

Interestingly, Apple News tipped me off to this -- an interesting case was just settled in Hawaii re: Navahine v. HDOT and I'm wondering how all the electricity will be generated to fulfill this settlement for zero emissions in the transportation sector. (Lead plaintiff, a minor, is a 15 year old native Hawaiian.) According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Hawaii gets 31% of its electricity from renewables (circa 2023). Still, the decision is compelling. Look forward to seeing how it plays out. And one of the major testing points for CO2 is in Hawaii (Mauna Loa Observatory) -- because at that location, all of the atmospheric gases are what is called well-mixed. "[The decision] confirms that youth have constitutional rights to a clean and healthful environment and that the state of Hawaiʻi has an obligation to protect youth’s interest in a stable climate" and "In the Settlement Agreement, the State is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from its statewide transportation system according to “the best scientific evidence today,” as determined by experts. This evidence shows that correcting Earth’s energy imbalance requires reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide to less than 350 parts per million this century." ( see: https://lnkd.in/gthVuWT4 ) And there is this from the decision, from the Terms and Conditions section: "1. GHG Emission Reductions: HDOT will 'take any actions necessary to achieve the goals established' in that section, specifically, 'zero [greenhouse gas] emissions across all sectors of: (1) Ground Transportation and (2) Sea and air interisland transportation.'" Did you know that the majority of clean energy investment and jobs are flowing to Republican-led states and congressional districts? 📈💼 In just the first two years of the Inflation Reduction Act, over half of all clean energy projects landed in Republican districts, with 19 out of the top 20 districts for these investments held by Republicans.⚡( via CleanTechnica). A big shoutout to Jay Turner and Wellesley College for their work on "The Big Green Machine" — one of our go-to resources for clear, visual Climate data! 👏 👉 Check out the website, linked in the comments, to explore more!

📝 Achieving net-zero emissions in Maryland means better health, new jobs and more opportunity. This week, Gov. Wes Moore signed a comprehensive executive order that deploys a whole-of-government approach to fighting climate change by: 📝 Creating the Governor’s Subcabinet on Climate and requiring all Maryland agencies to submit a Climate Implementation Plan to the governor by November 1. ✊ Ensuring all agency plans advance environmental justice by considering Justice40 goals, initiatives, and funding. ☀️ Directing Maryland Department of the Environment to propose a zero-emission heating equipment standard regulation and a clean heat standard regulation. 🏭 Working with Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative states to establish a new regional cap for carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. ⚡ Directing Maryland Energy Administration to establish a framework for a clean energy standard to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035. 🚌 Directing Maryland Department of Transportation to take several measures to promote clean transportation. California’s Inland Empire counties, located between Los Angeles and San Diego, is a transit hub. Unfortunately, the region's valleys trap industrial air pollution and the economy is lagging, despite being home to 11% of the state’s population. This Earth Month, ProGov21 is highlighting UC Berkeley Labor Center's report on the economic impacts of four major climate programs in the Inland Empire, identifying positive impacts and recommendations for improvement. Learn more about these policies and how your municipality can implement similar reforms here → https://lnkd.in/exY-5iVv

If there has been a big increase in uptake of photovoltaic panels in your area, it will only be a matter of time before the low voltage network (about 200 houses typically) reaches capacity. So this is a good solution in the absence of proper planning by energy operators for the transition…
🤔 Have an idea for a neighbourhood battery in your community, but feeling a little overwhelmed with options? Now's the time to get ready for the next funding round of the 100 Neighbourhoood Battery grants from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action Click here to learn more and register for our 2-day course in February: https://lnkd.in/gQqGMYa8 Thanks for sharing Finn Buchhorn!

A few former TexPIRG - Texas Public Interest Research Group Interns and I met with Zealan Hoover, the Senior Advisor to the EPA Administrator, and had a very fruitful conversation preceding the UT Energy Institute’s EnergizeUT event tomorrow. We discussed topics like how to increase awareness about programs like the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—which are massively under-recognized for their part in improving environmental conditions and individual quality of life in America. Similarly, we discussed how important it is to recognize the progress that has been made for atmospheric conditions, including the fact that U.S. GHG emissions are down by 18% from 2005 levels. This kind of improvement deserves positive recognition, and merits greater optimism regarding the direction of climatic conditions in the United States.

Do you have your rooftop solar panels? As needs go up and costs of electricity goes up, the value of those panels goes up too. UMich study finds climate change will increase value of residential solar panels (michigandaily.com)
