One of the biggest tragedies in Chennai's construction industry helped me realise the importance of getting specialised in one thing! On 28 June 2014, an eleven-storey apartment building collapsed while under construction at Moulivakkam in the suburb of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The collapse killed 61 people, mostly construction workers who were trapped in the debris it seems. I was driving that evening with my mom near Porur then there was an unusual amount of traffic. Ambulances, more than 10+ were passing at high speed. But I had no clue what was going around. The next day I came to know about the building collapse in Moulivakkam in TV news. The news left me deeply worried and speechless because the accident resonates with my field At the time, I was practising as a site engineer in a company. I was wondering how such an accident could occur because that's the first major construction accident I'm gone through in my life for the first time. Was it a structural engineer's error or a chief civil engineer's error? I'm curious to know but regardless of who's ever fault the result took innocent lives. This incident has become a turning point in my career and made me realize the critical importance of specialization and the dangers of overstepping into one's expertise. From that moment I decided to focus on my specific area and to never take on tasks for which I wasn't fully qualified. For example even though I have experience and knowledge in structural design, I am not a structural engineer. If someone approached me to design the structure for their building, I would say no gently and refer them to a qualified structural engineer. It may be hard for me but to understand my limits and to ensure that what ever i execute in my work is to be with precision and accuracy. This commitment to specialization and excellence has been a principle in my journey to build Corner Brick 9 Pvt Ltd It has allowed not only me but my team to become pioneers in the execution of buildings today. By being specific about our skills and ensuring perfection in every project, we've built a reputation for reliability and quality. To all professionals in my domain remember It's better to be a master of one trade than a jack of all trades. Specialization not only make sures the quality of our work but also safeguards lives and builds trust. #construction #cornerbrick9pvtltd #cornerbrick9construction #civilengineering #architectsandcontractors #specialization #focus #specificniche #experienceinconstruction #buildingcompany

Backfilling might seem like a routine task—just fill the soil and level it off, right? Wrong. Improper backfilling can lead to serious issues like cracked floors, uneven settlements, and even catastrophic building collapses. In Bangalore, several residential buildings collapsed due to improper backfilling practices. Contractors dumped large volumes of soil without layering or compacting properly, which caused the foundation to shift and led to structural failure. A similar incident occurred in the UK during the Gerrards Cross tunnel construction, where inadequate backfilling caused differential pressure on the structure, leading to a costly collapse. In Mumbai, a 50-year-old building in Kurla came down due to foundational weaknesses, made worse by poor soil management during construction. So how can we avoid such disasters? The right way to do backfilling involves placing soil in 15 cm layers, properly watering each layer, and compacting it thoroughly before adding the next. This ensures the stability of the foundation and prevents long-term settlement issues. Cutting corners might save time and money in the short run, but it can lead to life-threatening failures and expensive repairs down the line. Here’s the right way to backfill and prevent such disasters: 1️⃣ Layering: Fill in 15 cm layers at a time. 2️⃣ Watering: Properly water each layer to increase soil density. 3️⃣ Compacting: Compact each layer thoroughly before adding the next one. Proper backfilling is more than just filling soil—it’s about ensuring long-term structural stability. Cutting corners during this stage can lead to expensive repairs or, worse, life-threatening failures. #ConstructionTips #HomeConstruction #ContractorBusiness #FoundationMatters #BuildToLast #EngineeringLessons #RealEstateSales #SellValue

I strongly condemn the EPC contractor and the government entity /consultnat who has validated the design of the steel structure is responsible for this collapse. The major failure might be because of the cost compromised on the quality and structural integrity

Civil engineers are responsible not only for constructing buildings but also for their safe demolition, ensuring the process is sustainable and minimizes environmental impact. HYDRA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection), a newly formed department in Hyderabad, has been actively demolishing illegal constructions and is now planning to recruit more technical professionals from various fields such as remote sensing, surveying, irrigation, town planning, and revenue. The department is also adopting new technologies for the efficient demolition of these structures. HYDRA is committed to protecting government lands, ponds, and nalas from encroachment within GHMC limits which have been Constructed in FTL or Buffer zones. Main Responsibilities of HYDRA: 1. Protection of government properties 2. Curbing the encroachment of ponds and nalas 3. Removal of encroachments 4. Demolition of illegal constructions and structures 5. Removal of illegal hoardings and advertisements 6. Management of traffic, drinking water, and electricity supply As observed, Hyderabad has made efforts to integrate lakes into urban planning and stands out among all metro cities in India for its commendable urban planning and rich abundance of lakes and water resources. Did you know Hyderabad, often referred to as the "City of Lakes" boasts a remarkable number of lakes that not only enhance the city’s beauty but also serve as vital water resources.!! The fourth most populous city in India is home to 169 lakes, both natural and man-made, which have been meticulously preserved and integrated into the urban landscape. These lakes make the city more beautiful spots for the residents. As the city is Located on the Deccan Plateau, the city's soil type is mainly red sandy with areas of black cotton soil. Hyderabad falls in seismic zone-II and is least exposed to earthquakes. This makes the city suitable for skyscrapers🏙️. Approaches like HYDRA will enhance the city's sustainability, protect natural resources, and create a more comfortable living environment for residents. Other cities like Delhi and Bangalore are expected to follow this approach in the future. Do you also love Hyderabad?
