I recently read an article titled “Veterinary Medicine: Working with People Instead of Animals.” It covered topics such as teamwork, collaboration, professional development, and empathy and compassion. I chose to focus on empathy and compassion, which, in my opinion, is crucial. I noted two important points: veterinary technicians must be able to interpret an animal’s emotional state, and they must manage their own emotions while offering empathy to the animal’s owner. This important skill will be valuable in the future, enabling technicians to support both the owners and the animals themselves. I just read a very insightful article about becoming a veterinarian. It gave a lot of advice and things to consider when deciding if the veterinary field is right. One important thing it mentioned is that there are so many more career options than one would think in the veterinary field. You can work in a private clinic, for the government, specialize in animal welfare, and so much more! At my internship, I can take this into account and observe the different roles that each person has. From this, I can choose which option will fit me the best. The second point I want to share from the article is that it is important to have people skills too. Often, I think, we forget that vets don't just work with pets. They work with the owners too. I see this a lot at the clinic and it is becoming obvious that people skills can make all the difference. To go along with this, the article mentioned that forging friends in the field is crucial. At my internship, I can forge these friendships with the techs and vets so that I can have life long support from them. My internship taught me how to be careful around large animals. I liked this article because it shows the importance of safety for both the person working and the animals. "Working as a veterinarian is a rewarding career. But with reward comes responsibility! Vets are not only responsible for the health and well-being of animals in their care, they are also responsible for their own personal safety as well as their staff. Thus, it's important to be aware of common veterinary hazards." The article continues to state common hazards in a vet clinic, and how to properly prevent or limit these hazards. Technology is used in almost every aspect of the veterinary industry. Helping keep pet healthy and know what is going on with them before symptoms appear. I take interest in the incubator, it is made to keep pets warm after surgery. Many animals have issues with keeping their temperature while under anesthesia and while waking up from it. Incubators help a lot with regulating their temperature after anesthesia and keep a controlled environment for them to recover. Veterinarians are always being hired. With a growing population of pets people are always needing more veterinarian staffs. We see a growth of larger clinics which means veterinarian techs are always being searched for. Personally, I would like to go to Oklahoma. Considering Oklahoma State University has a wonderful vet school, as well as a high hiring rate for veterinarians. They have high pay there and many small animal clinics. As well as a constant growth of new clinics being opened which makes it easier to find a job. Both my veterinary assistant class and my animal science classes have been very helpful with developing the skills I need to pursue my dream job of becoming a veterinarian. One skill I acquired from my veterinary assistant class was being very detail oriented. For example in this class we learned the difference between intravenous injection and an intramuscular injection. Now, they may not sound that different but they make all the difference when it comes to actually giving these injections. This is something I have witnessed many times at the Nebo Animal Clinic. Most vaccines are injected intramuscular which means they don't pump the injection into the blood stream. Intravenous can be used for many other things and you have to take the time to find a vane and pump the injection into the blood stream. Compassion is another very important skill to have when doing this job. Even before I started taking my CTE classes I developed so much love and compassion to become a veterinarian in my future. Taking CTE classes like animal science and veterinary assisting only expanded my love and compassion for this career choice. And even now with this internship I look forward to going and I am so involved with everything going on at the vet clinic my compassion for this career only grows with time. Communication skills are very very important skills in this career path and although I am still working on improving this skill I can say it has gotten so much better than it was before my CTE classes. Animal science and veterinary assisting have really made me start to develop my communication skills and try to use them more in my everyday life. My communication skills could still use some improvement but this internship and the classes I am taking have really really helped and all this help can also only make my communication skills go up from here. #nebointerns #utahcteinternships #internships #shhsinterns

I found this article on what to expect when working in a vet clinic and found it super interesting! There are a multitude of people working at a clinic together including the veterinarians, technicians, secretaries, and more. Clinics are open for a set number of hours but even after closing the crew needs to stay until patients are stabilized and comfortable in their stressful environment. There isn't a ton of staff to handle rushes or emergency patients which means vets and techs need to be able to handle everything at once. Technicians are a huge part of veterinary medicine and are usually underestimated. Not only do they need to know how to handle patients and cleaning. Techs need to know how to assist in surgeries and procedures including drawing blood and administering medications. They have a never ending list of responsibilities that are constantly changing and growing. All animals interact with stress differently and often it's dangerous handling them which means the techs practically have to be battle ready! There is so much more to a veterinary clinic than meets the eye and it seems stressful but so much more exciting. This will help me improve my internship because I'm definitely going to be more mindful of learning how to handle the crazy time and tasks. Helping the staff and working with them as much as I can will definitely be a goal. In 2022, I began collaborating with NGOs across the country to support their work in conservation from a veterinary perspective. The Turtle Survival Alliance is one such organization, dedicated to protecting key stakeholders of riverine systems, including 19 freshwater turtle species, crocodiles, gharials, and dolphins. We provided veterinary assistance to TSA by posting veterinarians to assist them in maintainaing assurance colonies and assistance in triage and treatment during mass confiscations of illegally smuggled turtles. Through this collaboration, we gained valuable insights and decided to share our findings with the world, leading to this paper. Soft shell turtles, one of the largest but most elusive species in riparian systems, are particularly vulnerable to water pollution, which can lead to high mortality rates. Our work in Assam involved identifying a suitable and safe location to draw blood for analysis in these aggressive animals. This paper details our findings. We offer a paid internship for veterinarians aspiring to work with reptiles, placing them with this organization for six months and helping them produce a paper that benefits turtles and science.
