Hydrogen motorsport news ! 🏎️ Last night, during the first meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) for 2024, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile has presented its vision for hydrogen fuel in motorsport. To sum-up here are the key takeaways : 💧Liquid hydrogen (#LH2) storage as the primary focus of development. Citing a more suitable solution to intensive applications with tank volume and weight optimization as main drivers. ⏳Gazeous H2 to remain as an interim solution. ❌No mention of powertrain preferences, between fuel cell and hydrogen powered internal combustion engine. The choice of LH2 for #motorsport is not surprising given extreme environments powertrains are put through on the track. ❓Now, the question of the integration of liquid hydrogen in motorsport remains. How to limit boil-off during storage and thermal expansion when refueling ? All while maintaining acceptable safety standards. This will require the development of new technologies in the field of high-flow liquid hydrogen refueling and compact LH2 storage. A very interesting perspective given the potential technology transfers down the line especially in intensive mobility applications both on land, sea and in the sky.
