The partnership between American Dental Association and The ADA Forsyth Institute means big things in the world of oral health research, and JADA and #JADAFS are excited to publish some of the clinical and basic science studies that emerge from it.

New data from AHRQ reveals a significant decrease in emergency department visits for dental conditions during the COVID-19 era. Treat-and-release visits dropped 17.7%, with nontraumatic dental conditions seeing a 23.1% decline. Patients deserve to have most of their premium dollars cover the costs of the dental care they need. A dental loss ratio (DLR), also called a medical loss ratio (MLR), helps hold insurers accountable, pushing for better plans. Learn more about how DLR drives better patient care at ADA.org/DLR.

DLR will not impact all dental insurance. What is missing here is the fact that the majority of dental insurance is self insured. This means an employer pays the bill and the insurance company is only handling the claims from all of the dentists in the network. They only collect a fee per claim like a credit card processor. These bills for DLR only target fully insured plans which represent less than 20% of comercial dental insurance. There is no way a dentist can tell when an employer is offering a self insured vs a fully insured plan. The employer is the one deciding this. If American Dental Association wants to make a real change they should create legislation that sets floors on coverage by employers, eliminates self insured plans, or some other creative solution. The insurance companies customer for 80% of the dental insurance spend in the economy is an employer. I won’t hold my breathe that DLR will move the needle. If dentists think rates will go up they are naive. I predict we will see narrower networks that push patients toward that network with more benefits and more value based metrics, or vertical consolidation with DSOs to capture the margin.
