How can we ensure that #WashingtonState policies are shaped by frontline communities most impacted by pollution and income inequality? Alongside our fellow partner organizations, Front and Centered is convening #CommunityAssemblies across the state to center community expertise and make our government’s approach to making laws and investing public money more effective. Disparities in health care, housing, and safe environments are due, in part, to a disconnect between government policy making and community members with lived experiences of these challenges. Community Assemblies are a tool for building capacity for greater collaboration between people and government. "People who struggle to make ends meet on a minimum wage job or live in neighborhoods with air pollution have important ideas on how to address challenges that affect their lives everyday," said Deric Gruen, Front and Centered Co-Executive Director. “Community Assemblies can make government programs and investments more effective and create a healthier democracy.” “Community Assemblies are a bold investment in low-income and Black, Indigenous, and communities of color to elevate community expertise and solutions to budget and policy makers on sustainable investments to raise the economic and environmental floors in Washington,” said Lindsay Morgan Tracy, Innovator-in-Chief, Washington Economic Justice Alliance, at the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. We are excited to share two new guides written in collaboration with Medact to support healthcare workers advocating for a transformative housing and energy system by talking about our health. The first guide, Talking about our homes, our health and the climate crisis, talks about the relationship between our homes and health in order to advocate for a better housing and energy system to tackle the climate crisis. These messaging principles advocate that social homes for everyone is the way to ensure that everyone has a secure, affordable, good quality place to live and that is the foundation for good health and wellbeing. Research into public thinking showed that not only do people recognise that poor housing quality is harmful to our health but they also think housing should be a top priority for the government. 2) Talk about the home as the foundation of our lives and a source of stability, safety and health. Show that our crumbling housing infrastructure is making people sick: Put people in your narrative. Use storytelling to show how unsafe housing infrastructure and spiralling energy bills and rent negatively impacts on our mental and physical health. 3) Remind people that it wasn’t always like this. Talk about housing policies that were truly transformative to our health. Policies that built social homes and made them available to everyone. 4) Make it clear that this problem is systemic. Most people believe that housing problems are the individuals fault. Explain how specific policy decisions made my successive governments have created the current problems in our housing system. Be very clear and specific about how we got here. 5) Always have a solution! Start with a solution that feels very actionable before talking about more long term system solutions.

The impact of Section 8 assistance extends far beyond merely providing shelter. It fosters stability, promotes economic mobility, and strengthens communities. By alleviating the burden of housing costs, families can allocate more resources towards other essential needs, such as education, healthcare, and savings. Moreover, Section 8 plays a vital role in combating homelessness, preventing displacement, and reducing housing inequalities. It empowers individuals to live in neighborhoods of their choice, fostering social inclusion and diversity. However, despite its proven effectiveness, Section 8 faces challenges, including funding limitations, bureaucratic hurdles, and stigma. As advocates for housing affordability, it's imperative for us to advocate for policies that expand access to Section 8 assistance, streamline the application process, and combat discrimination against voucher holders. The Government through the Department of Social Development is rolling out the Food Deficit and Mitigation Strategy (FDMS) program in various districts however accessibility and lack of road network remains one of the major challenge that hinder social protection programs. The manifestations of such a challenge are.  The process of targeting will fail to reach those who are most vulnerable e.g elderly, persons with disabilities and those with chronic illness. 

88 pages of the draft #ProgrammeForGovernment and only one reference to older people, and that's under "climate action plan". Nothing specific within housing, nothing specific under social care. Both of these are inextricably linked if we are to ensure that older people can thrive. We need an increase in the provision of the right mix of housing types for older people and the right health and social care interventions so that older people can live as independently as possible, but with the right support mechanisms when required. This can reduce hospital admissions and delayed discharges minimised because the place they call home is suitable for their needs and the right care is in place. Our sixth roundtable took place at the start of this month in #Cardiff, co-hosted by Riverside Advice. It focused on the affect #FuelPoverty has on #vulnerable and #older people. Observations included: ⚡ It takes time and patience to build #trust with older people to open up about their energy poverty challenges, which means some offerings of #support provision, including phone and digital, can be less effective. ⚡ Outreach work in the #communities where older people live can pay dividends in terms of reaching people who might need help but don’t ask for it or know what’s available to them. ⚡ Older people are rationing #energy use and even self-disconnecting rather than asking for help, creating a hidden #problem of fuel poverty among the elderly.
