Comms folks -- Good read here from Will Valentine. He took a data based approach to understand the reality of funding announcement coverage for startups. Anyone who has been in this field long enough has had at least one of these conversations with a startup founder. Good jumping-off point for a larger discussion about the true value of funding announcement coverage. We can all agree that it certainly doesn't hurt (so long as messaging and company expectations are properly aligned in the piece.) But funding stories should be considered a means to an end, not the end itself. Much more valuable in the long run is building a strong narrative and reason to exist among customers, employees and partners is much more valuable than one ephemeral story, IMO. Do that well, coverage will come. https://lnkd.in/gsKqvPUV

Very excited to be working with Nicholas Carlson and his amazing team of investors and partners on a new video-journalism startup — Dynamo Media! Video is by far the most consumed and influential journalism medium in the world today. But viewership of the old video-journalism medium — linear TV — declines every year, as new generations of media consumers shift their attention to digital. Gen-Z already watches 3X as much TikTok and 2X as much YouTube every day as linear TV. This shift will continue for decades. Native digital platforms are enabling new forms of video storytelling and journalism, with new, native-digital distribution channels. Just as the rise of cable TV created the opportunity and need for native 24-hour cable-news networks, the proliferation of digital-video consumption has created a need for trusted, native-digital-video journalism brands with sustainable business models — the companies that will become the video journalism networks of the 21st Century. Nick and Dynamo are leading the way!
Scoop: Nicholas Carlson, the former top editor of Business Insider, is launching a new media startup, with backing from Henry Blodget, Alyson Shontell, Jessica E. Lessin and others. Just don't call it a pivot to video!

Is this the new form of media we need? Dynamo promises to produce well produced/written and evergreen video content for social platforms...like this one. No politics. Subjects that maybe aren't hard news but fascinate. With Dynamo, Nicholas Carlson aims to create content to meet rising consumption habits: video and built for social sharability. I'll be watching Dynamo (and its content) and cheering this team on. Any media company who can crack this code when many w deeper pockets failed...much respect. Benjamin Mullin (from the other media outlet that continues to defy trends by giving audiences what they want and how they want it--The New York Times -- has the scoop. #media #newsmedia #socialmedia #socialvideo #mediaindustry

Of late, clients and prospects at Proper Propaganda have said things to me that suggest they view tech media as monolithic. We've always said that just because CNET covers you does not mean Engadget will. Tech outlets are very different in terms of who, how and what they choose to write about. The real issue is that viewing tech media as a homogenous block is dangerous for any PR program. Sure, sometimes there is blanket coverage of a story, but even then tones, angles, formats and other nuances vary and thus present different opportunities and challenges for a company's PR function. Borjana Slipicevic and I addressed this in The Tech PR Playbook. In the interest of helping people get a bit more info on this topic, I am including one of the pieces of gated content we had in our book, here. The doc identifies a range of bigger tech media and gives a bit of info on each's tendencies and proclivities. It is far from an exhaustive list, and indeed some bigger ones (like CNN Underscored and Tech Radar) are missing. But it does offer human analysis and insight on what specific outlets like and cover. As you will see, there is a ton of variance. Tag or share with a Founder who could use this info. #tech #techmedia #pr #consumertech #ces #scaleup #startup #vc #founders

Coverage in top media can be the difference between anonymity and growth for a startup and help you stand out from the competition. However, many startups struggle to get in simply because they don’t know how to do it right. Rather than telling you what to do, we decided to tell you what NOT to do. Our newest blog reveals a list of things you need to avoid if you want top media coverage! 👇🏻 #PR #publicrelations #pitching #communications

For many types of PR clients, especially startups, “hard” news, which is the gold standard for connecting with reporters, is sporadic at best. When slow times happen – the dog days of summer are a big one! – clients still want results. Playing it safe with your PR is like pouring water on a fire – it'll extinguish your growth. Businesses, especially startups, need to make a splash, not a ripple. Here's why generic, cookie-cutter PR is a recipe for anonymity: 1. Blending in = Fading out. Safe press releases and interviews won't get you noticed in the crowded digital landscape. 2. No risk = No reward. Bold angles and unique perspectives are what capture media attention and fuel audience interest. 3. "Boring" is easily forgotten. A quick scroll through social feeds is all it takes to erase yawn-inducing content from memory. A few years back, a new client came to us desperate. They'd been doing "nice, polite" PR – and getting zero traction. We flipped the script, pushed a slightly edgy angle, and the result? Major publications picked up their story. Calculated risks ignite visibility. It's time to ditch the predictable and embrace a PR strategy that truly reflects your brand's fire. Need help finding your spark? 9-Figure Media specializes in bold, attention-grabbing PR for startups ready to make a real impact. DM or Comment "Strategy" P.S. Do you think "playing it safe" in PR is ever the right move? Repost ♻️ if you got value from this #PRStrategies #StartupGrowth #BoldPR #UniquePerspective #MediaCoverageTips #PRAgency #9figuremedia
