🌍 Abu Dhabi’s Climate Action: Leading the Way at COP29 Azerbaijan The Department of Energy Abu Dhabi and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) have presented significant progress in implementing the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy at COP29. This ambitious five-year plan (2023–2027) is a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi's contribution to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, showcasing leadership in environmental sustainability. Key Objectives: 🌱 Emission Reduction: Targeting a 22% reduction in carbon emissions by 2027. 🌿 Climate Resilience: Strengthening adaptability across energy, health, infrastructure, and environmental sectors. Strategic Pillars 1. Mitigation: Focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining economic growth through decarbonization, innovative technologies, and renewable energy projects. 2. Adaptation: Enhancing resilience against climate risks to protect key sectors and communities. Notable Initiatives: 🚗 Promoting low-emission vehicles to reduce air pollution and carbon footprints. 🌊 Expanding mangrove restoration with innovative techniques like drones to combat coastal erosion and absorb carbon dioxide. 🛍️ Encouraging green procurement by incentivizing sustainable product markets. ☀️ Developing the Al Dhafra PV Solar Plant, the world’s largest single-site solar plant, generating 2.0 GW of power to supply 160,000 homes and reduce 2.4 million metric tons of CO₂ annually. Abu Dhabi’s climate strategy includes 81 initiatives and 12 key strategic projects, balancing environmental stewardship with economic development. I’m heading to COP29 in Baku 🇦🇿for a few key reasons that tie directly into the work we’re doing at GSD Africa: #1 Climate intersects with everything we do. Whether in climate tech, drones, health 🏥 , or agriculture 🌾 , climate change affects every sector we’re involved in. For example, a 2°C increase in temperature is expected to 📉reduce crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa by 10%, and a 3°C increase could make maize, millet, and sorghum unsuitable for growing. Being at COP helps me connect with a global audience, hear different perspectives, and understand how climate shapes other industries worldwide. #2 Our clients work in this space. Many clients work at the forefront of climate change mitigation and adaptation in various ways, but everyone can't be at COP. For example, Tomorrow.io works with governments, helping communities become more resilient by providing actionable weather intelligence. Arab Sustainability Week by the League of Arab States - General Secretariat 🌟 Glad to represent COP29 outcomes at the session titled “Translating Global Outcomes into Regional Impact” at the Arab Week for Sustainable Development, where I focused on outcomes from the global UN conferences and their implications for the Arab region. I highlighted the following key priorities including: • Energy Transition: the exceptional opportunities for the Arab countries to lead with renewable solutions like solar and green hydrogen while managing economic diversification and continue leading the energy sector globally. • Adaptation Needs: Scaling investments in climate-resilient infrastructure to address vulnerabilities like water scarcity and rising temperatures. • Access to Finance: Leveraging the newly established Loss and Damage Fund and the climate finance opportunities given the NCQG to address regional challenges, including desertification and climate-induced migration. The session emphasized aligning global ambitions with regional priorities, setting a roadmap for impactful local action. Grateful to have shared insights on how the Arab region can navigate these transformative outcomes to build a sustainable, resilient future. 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟐𝟗: 𝐀 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 The 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐍 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (COP29 Azerbaijan) in 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐮 wrapped up with important outcomes across various themes, but many challenges remain to be addressed. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬: ✅ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝: 𝟏. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: A new collective goal was set, with developed countries committing to $300 billion annually by 2035, tripling previous targets. However, this still falls short of the $1.3 trillion requested by developing nations. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬: After nearly a decade of negotiations, a global agreement on carbon markets was reached, marking a significant step forward. 𝟑. 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 & 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: The Baku Initiative on Human Development and the 2030 Global Cooling Pledge addressed climate resilience and sustainable cooling solutions, vital for protecting vulnerable communities. ❌ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝: 𝟏. 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝: Critical discussions on phasing out fossil fuels were deferred to COP30 in Brazil. 𝟐. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬: Developing nations are still calling for $1.3 trillion annually, viewing the $300 billion pledge as insufficient to meet their needs. 𝟑. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬: Efforts to integrate climate and biodiversity goals remain underfunded, leaving critical gaps in action. 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐙𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬: 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐃𝐚𝐲: For the first time, tourism was a central focus, highlighting its 8.8% contribution to global emissions. The Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism was launched, underscoring the need for innovation and decarbonization in the sector. 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐙𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬: Nearly 50 countries endorsed the COP29 Declaration on Water for Climate Action, calling for integrated approaches to protect water basins from climate impacts and strengthen ocean resilience. 🌊 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝: COP29 Azerbaijan set the stage for crucial progress, but translating ambition into action and ensuring inclusive solutions will be key to tackling the climate crisis. Saudi Arabia Hosts the World at COP16: Advancing Sustainable Solutions to Combat Desertification and Land Degradation I am delighted to announce my participation in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), which will take place in Riyadh from December 2 to December 13, 2024. This global event serves as a pivotal platform for addressing the urgent challenges of desertification and land degradation while promoting sustainable management of natural resources. Through high-level meetings, workshops, and interactive discussions, key topics to be addressed include: • Developing innovative strategies for rehabilitating degraded lands. • Strengthening public-private partnerships to support sustainability initiatives. • Showcasing advanced technologies and AI-driven solutions for combating desertification. • Sharing global expertise in sustainable land and resource management. By hosting this significant event, Saudi Arabia reaffirms its commitment to leading global efforts in tackling environmental challenges and driving sustainability. This aligns with its ambitious initiatives, such as the Middle East Green Initiative and Generation Restoration, which are integral to the country’s transformative Vision 2030 strategy. In addition to participating in key discussions and panels, I look forward to connecting with global leaders, experts, and innovators, and contributing to actionable solutions that support both international and regional efforts.
