What happens when talent doesn't fear failure... Last night, 16 year-old (YES you read that right) Lamine Yamal scored what will go down as one of the greatest goals in Euros history, bringing Spain level with France. It was a turning point that led to Spain's eventual victory and place in the final on Sunday. Now I don't know the ins and outs of the coaching approach in Spain and Barcelona (where Lamine plays his club football) - but the event highlights what brilliance can be achieved when talent is nurtured effectively. Talent must FIRST prove that it is bought into the vision and the ethos of the team. As soon as that has happened, talent MUST: - be given responsibility - be respected by peers irrespective of tenure - be allowed to fail - be made comfortable taking risks - be trusted to make the right decisions. YOU are talent. How many times have you nearly contributed to a meeting...then held back? How many ideas have you almost suggested an idea...only to 'think better of it'? How often has someone spoken over you and you've assumed that what they had to say is more important than what you were going to offer? If your talent isn't being nurtured appropriately, you need to take control and demand responsibility, respect & trust. The penultimate Friday before the Go Live of AGORA. The spotlight is on those unsung heroes who have had to overcome a lot of challenges locally to ensure the project stays on track. Jiri Pernica - (with much-needed support from Tomasz Kukula) has coordinated his own set of champions across all of CEE. 9 countries, their requirements, testing, user access management, 9 different IT departments, local regulations etc. Honestly, the guy needs a medal. Next we have Javier Abellán & Alberto Rojo Moro who are the champions for Med & Latam, so not just coordinating 5 countries, but also multiple different time zones! Again, 5 different local IT departments, a massive undertaking! Finally Michael Shum and Tom Wong who have been working tirelessly in Hong Kong and Thailand, staying late, getting up early just to remain part of the team. This is where we see the benefit of virtual working! Managing one country is complex enough, but when you manage a region with so many moving parts - to stay positive, resolute and focused is a must! Reunion in Bucharest and the Potential for Central and Eastern European IT Companies to Enter the Japanese Market On the final leg of my business trip, I reunited with Octavian, the Founder & CEO of the Romanian software company Dyver (https://dyver.app/), in Bucharest after six years. I first met him during my time at OceanBridge at a trade show, where we exchanged business cards. At that time, he was the CEO of a company called CustomSoft, which he has since passed on to a successor. Now, he has founded Dyver, an eCommerce content management platform, and is working hard to establish it in the market. Octavian, like many Hungarian companies, is eager to enter the Japanese market and has already found a partner to assist in this endeavor. I expressed my willingness to support him in any way I can as he moves forward with this initiative. While there are certainly challenges to entering the Japanese market—such as language barriers and differences in business practices—Japan's shrinking domestic market makes it crucial for Japanese companies to actively seek partnerships with overseas firms. Central and Eastern European IT companies, in particular, have shown a strong interest in the Japanese market. I believe that deepening relationships with these companies presents a significant opportunity for Japanese businesses to expand into international markets. Throughout this trip, I was consistently impressed by the humility of everyone I met, and their focus on building long-term relationships and achieving mutual success. What touched me most was how many of them resonated with the "Life is Taketombo" philosophy.
