NBPD Enhances Officer Safety with Grant-Funded Equipment from Three Rivers Foundation NBPD officers receive new active shooter trauma kits and StopStick devices through a $10,000 grant, boosting public safety readiness.   The North Bend Police Department (NBPD) is proud to announce the deployment of new safety equipment funded by a generous $10,000 grant from the Three Rivers Foundation. This critical funding has allowed NBPD to issue active shooter trauma response kits to every officer and install StopStick tire deflation devices in all patrol vehicles. The active-shooter trauma kits are designed to provide officers with life-saving tools in high-risk situations, allowing them to offer immediate care to victims during critical incidents. The StopStick devices will enhance the department’s ability to safely and quickly halt vehicles during dangerous pursuits, minimizing risks to both officers and the public. "We are deeply grateful to the Three Rivers Foundation for their support," said Chief of Police Cal Mitts. "This equipment is a significant boost to our department's ability to respond swiftly and safely to crisis situations, ensuring we are better prepared to protect our community." How do you assess the impact of an HiH - brokered police engagement event? It probably needs more than a happy photo, although all good when there is one. When TSG NW met Gladesmore N15’s School Council last week the students were asked to give before and after scores to MOPAC’s seven public voice survey questions. The results were interesting. Most responses saw post engagement positive increases of around 17 - 20%, but one question, understanding what the police were doing in the area (to reduce crime), produced a standout + 47%. UK policing is based on the principle of consent, communities understanding and then supporting how law enforcement is exercised to increase their safety. Recent reports and events have highlighted the many challenges the MPS faces in generating that dynamic, but on this evidence a key way to reverse current trends is clear, and very simple. 40% of all shootings in a hospital ER happen because someone gets an officers weapon. Do you have weapons retainment training going on for your officers? Do you have a policy that states that officers who haven’t been through proper retainment training must remove weapons upon entry and store them so this doesn’t happen? Patients in custody do not require armed guards, especially if they are going to be sitting within arms reach and are restrained to the bed. Many times officers sit too close and are on their phones instead of paying attention. (Until you have cared for 100s of criminal patients don’t try to argue that fact with me. I’ve prob woken up over a dozen sleeping officers in my career sitting next to very dangerous folks, armed) If they don’t have the training to keep their weapons safe when attacked by a patient, they shouldn’t bring them into my arena. We all know police training and prison officer training is not sufficient or frequent enough when it comes to weapons management. What are you doing in your locations to ensure firearms don’t get into the wrong hands? Healthcare workers should not have to live in fear because of the failure of training and lack of professional policing knowledge that led to this. Because honestly… there is no other excuse. Lack of situational awareness. Lack of physical restraint training. Lack of weapons retainment training. Lack of self defense training. Lack of professionalism. You could say well Mel, you weren’t there you don’t know what happened. True, but I do know that it should have never been possible. What are you doing to make this impossible for your hospitals? Thank God no one was physically hurt, but the emotional toll that just took on everyone should not be dismissed.

Today Governor Evers was in Appleton, WI at the Appleton FD and signed Senate Bill SB829 into effect.
