As we continue to celebrate the significance of investing in women this #IWD, we caught up with our Omnichannel Marketing & Technology Specialist, 💡 Maddy Brown, who took part in a Women in Leadership program, and also headed up a unique marketing campaign which took her around the world with Canon. Curious to learn more about her journey, we delved into her experiences as a woman thriving at Canon.
What is something that you think is important but hard to do as a woman in the workplace?
Something difficult but important for women in the workplace is prioritising their own self and career development. I have often found women in particular, prioritise the needs of others, go above and beyond for those around them and leave the crumbs for themselves. This happens to women across all levels of seniority, so providing access to formal training programs and having supportive leadership that believe in the continual development of their people is crucial.
What is your proudest achievement or accomplishment at Canon?
Having the opportunity to lead the EOS R50 ‘Turn Up Your Travels’ campaign. To celebrate the launch of Canon’s new lightweight camera, which is perfect for travel, I accompanied one of our content creators, Wil Calabio, on an absolutely insane two-week road-test around the world. As we travelled through Qatar, Spain, Portugal and Scotland, Wil’s community of 600K+ people were voting in real time on where we’d go and what we’d do next. At the end of the trip, we’d captured close to 5,000 images and 20+ videos which were then promoted as part of this campaign, resulting in our most successful campaign in terms of video views ever. Working alongside Wil, his creative partner in crime and videographer, and our producer Karen Muxworthy, was an absolutely unforgettable experience that I’ll always remember as a stand-out moment working at Canon.
Which woman inspires you the most?
This answer may be a bit cliché, but I’d have to say my Mum! She is an absolute powerhouse, and someone I look up to so much. She is ridiculously intelligent, relentlessly selfless and yet incredibly humble. She somehow manages to balance a demanding full-time career with running a whole household, maintaining a social life and always being there for my brother and I. As I get older, I become more in awe of how she magically keeps everything moving and I admire how she always speaks her mind and leads with generosity. There’s no two ways about it, she’s the best.
Let’s continue to celebrate the achievements and resilience of women like Maddy (and her Mum!), who continue to inspire and uplift us.
