I wonder: What is it about preparing talks that the story only starts to form when last-minute stress kicks in? I frequently speak at meetups, conferences, and gatherings. I enjoy being on stage or just in front of a large group of people to share a story.  But the process of forming a new talk?! That's not something I look back at with great pleasure. I will present the opening keynote this Wednesday at the AxonIQ Conference in Amsterdam. It's an annually recurring event, and as the founder, it's not unlikely that I'll be on the schedule with a talk here or there. I could see this one coming a year in advance, so I had plenty of time to prepare. I've been gathering little bits and pieces of the story. I've taken notes as things happened that were relevant enough to include. I even sat down at one moment to try to puzzle them together. But it wasn't until last week that the story properly started taking shape. Is it normal to need the deadline approaching like a runaway train for pieces of a story to start fitting together? I'm happy with how the story for Wednesday is coming together. But if there's a way to get it done a bit earlier, it would certainly give me more peace of mind in the days approaching a conference. What tips and tricks do you have? Or is this really just part of the game?
