As someone who is now retired but spent 16 years representing various trade associations and their members, I was interested to read this item in FE Week. It reports that a construction T Level has been axed after three years, despite, in the words of the Department for Education, "helping students into positive destinations". The new thinking in education and skills that T Levels represent would have gone better, and would go better in future, if the government brought trade associations more fully into the process at an early stage. That would mean just a little bit more effort during planning and would result in better design and greater industry awareness and understanding of what was being done and why. It would be entirely right for government to require the trade associations involved to demonstrate that they were doing their bit in terms of contribution and engagement with their sector, of course. We have a new government promising change for the better; and Rachel Reeves is looking for value for money. Trade associations offer both. https://lnkd.in/eRMj7Xru

Today James McLarnon & Matthew Blair visited Priory Integrated College in Holywood alongside Philip Griffiths from the Ulster University to introduce the students to the Building Services Industry.    There is currently an extreme shortage of M&E engineers. With numbers of students signing onto courses at the university dwindling we need to act now so not only ourselves at SCC can grow but so can all M&E practices in Northern Ireland can continue to grow and expand. At SCC we believe that one of the main reasons for this is that it’s not a well-known profession. Most people outside of the industry the team meet have never heard of the role, and they have to explain what they actually do.   It’s so important now that we get into schools and raise awareness of the courses at the universities so young people see building services engineering as a career path. We plan to work with the University of Ulster to visit more schools in the near future and would encourage other M&E consultancies to do the same with their students or graduates.    James and Matthew did a fantastic job today explaining why the building services industry is a great career path and will only continue to develop and grow as a role in the future. The guys explained what a typical day would look like, our expertise, competitive salaries, making a difference to the environment through design and that’s it’s a role that continual learning is at the forefront of what we do.     Great feedback was received and lots of interest from the teachers and students. Even if one of the many students today decided to pursue a career in Building Services it was a morning well spent. 

Incorporating construction education in primary, secondary, or higher education can ignite students’ interest as the nation celebrates National Construction Week from September 16 to September 20.

In Gorinchem, two vocational schools are empowering students with real-world skills, thanks to support from the ESF+. From cultivating a greenhouse to gaining industry certifications, these young people are building a path to independence and brighter futures. The ESF+ funding has not only supported the schools' programmes but also helped them cover essential costs, from maintaining equipment to providing materials for welding lessons. This has enabled the schools to provide high-quality education and training to their students. Exciting news! The Ontario government is investing over CAD 4.7 million through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) in three Niagara Region projects to offer FREE training to 2,318 youth, apprentices, and jobseekers for in-demand careers in skilled trades. This brings Ontario's total SDF investment to nearly CAD 1.1 billion, emphasizing the province's commitment to training and development. Here are the funded projects: 1. Civiconnect Youth Community Engagement Organization: CAD 3 million to train 350 youth in technical and workplace skills. 2. Edge Factor Inc: CAD 1,087,600 to showcase skilled trade careers online to 1,920 youth and job seekers. 3. United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 1007: CAD 650,369 for a new welding trailer to train 48 apprentices and journeypersons. 👷 IUEC Local 4 members are dedicated to ensuring safety in every aspect of their work on elevators, escalators, and other conveyance equipment across eastern Massachusetts, most of New Hampshire, and all of Maine. When we visited their Dorchester, MA headquarters, we spoke with President Doug Cullington, Business Managers, Representatives, and some of their newest apprentices. The resounding theme? #Safety 💬 "To work safe is to think. Think before every move. Every step of every project must be talked about," emphasizes Doug Cullington, President of IUEC Local 4. This focus on safety was echoed by Mary Kate Kelly, one of Local 4’s apprentice Elevator Constructors.
