Out now, MULTISOLVING by Elizabeth SAwin is a unique resource for anyone hoping to address the current mismatch between complex, deeply intertwined societal issues and our siloed approach to them. It’s for local school boards that need revenue for their students but don’t want to overtax low-income seniors. It is for nonprofits working to reduce food waste and combat the root causes of hunger while increasing racial justice. It is for seaside communities that can protect themselves from flooding while also improving biodiversity with a living coastline. And that’s just scratching the surface of this book’s applicability. In our research, we focused on adapting our approach to meet the unique needs of each community we worked with. One of the most rewarding aspects was supporting communities to reflect on their achievements and successes using participatory inclusive evaluation methods like the River of Life and Ripple Effect Mapping. In long programmes like Big Local (10-15 years!), it’s easy to lose momentum, but revisiting both big and small wins can reignite motivation and progress and help with planning for the future. Our findings emphasise how flexible, non-prescriptive funding can generate an interconnected web of power to: - expose limiting or facilitating power structures that can be navigated and negotiated by community members, - build responsive resilient resident networks that are there for people when it’s most needed, - strengthen organisational connections for a collective voice in decision-making. We hope these insights will guide future community-led initiatives and funding strategies. What happens when around £1m in non-prescriptive funding is provided to 150 communities across England that need it most? Our new research, conducted by the Stop Collaborate and Listen Agency, identifies a web of nine interconnected components showing how access to, and spending of, non-prescriptive funding can generate and sustain community power.
