Here’s the 10 things I learned as a 22-year old restaurant owner… 1) Age doesn’t matter. Provide purpose and people will follow. 📆 2) Work-Life balance is overrated. There is no greater feeling than putting everything you have into something. 3) If you don’t have kids, your allowed to move your desk in the kitchen and steal the dining table 😁 4) Don’t make decisions out of fear. The outcome is never as bad as you think. 5) Be authentic. I read every leadership book I could find to try and ‘act’ like a leader… at the end of the day, authenticity matters most. People smell out BS like a bloodhound. 🐕🦺 6) Self-certainty and your 20’s go hand in hand. That can be a superpower! 🦸🏽 …or destroy you. 7) We are the sum of the 5 people we talk to most. Be VERY conscious of who they are. 8) You are stronger than the world tells you. I regularly worked triple shifts (30 hours straight). Was it healthy, no. 🤕 Empowering, yes. It’s only when we stretch ourselves to the absolute limit that we find out how strong we really are. 💪 9) Complacency is like cancer. It’s hard to stop the spread if you let it take hold. 10) People matter above all else. If it wasn’t for people like Andrew McGehee, Michael Satoh, Jayquan K., Sean Winkler, Jonathan Valdez, Aaron Litz, Leonard Taylor, Egerton Edwards, and MANY others, failure would have been a certainty. THANK YOU! #restaurants #leadership #journey #learning #advice ClearCOGS
By the logic of no2, you can "put everything you have" on anything, other than life. To each their own, I guess.
And I thought my 18-hour shifts were hardcore haha
Good for you Matt. #2 and #8 will take you to the promise land. The biz can be brutal, but it's beautiful!
Outstanding Matt! Can’t wait to have you on the show!
Love this
Yep! Be yourself!!! "5) Be authentic. I read every leadership book I could find to try and ‘act’ like a leader… at the end of the day, authenticity matters most. People smell out BS like a bloodhound."
And I thought I was extreme for working 22hours straight 😄
7. We are the sum of 5 people we talk to. No better words. I feel like that one was personally for me.

11moI love this. There’s a lot of passion in your words and your observations ring true. I’ve got some decades on you age wise. I’m delighted to tbe on a ship with a young captain who’s authentic and in touch with reality. BS stinks and it’s not healthy to live in it. I like to row the boat, but I have vast experience that can be helpful to the captain from time to time. Creativity, connection with others and brilliance isn’t confined to a neat little office space. Thank you for your refreshing post.💪🏻
