So why are you going to devcom? I received this question frequently from friends and colleagues. Most of the studios we know (and love 😍 ) focused on Gamescom this year. But after meeting Iryna Ivanova 🔜 devcom 🔜 gamescom at GDC earlier this year, I knew that devcom was an event I could not miss. And boy, did it deliver! Although we still have the closing party before Gamescom starts, here are some reasons why you should consider putting devcom on your list for next year. 1. The talks: the level of information shared by the speakers was inspirational and of high quality. 2. The people: I've met so many people, from game designers to tool makers to large enterprises to publishers and investors, and all in a very open and accessible way. 3. The Side events: These were really well organized. The team at Devcom really went above and beyond on this. It really helped put everyone in a networking mood, even the people who don't even like to do it. 4. The venue: The venue was in a beautiful, newly built hall, so it never felt cramped even though it was the largest version of Devcom ever. A big shoutout to the devcom team for a fabulous time! See you tomorrow at Gamescom! (and tonight at the party)

At WINGS, we are doing the last bit of planning before attending gamescom next week! Here are some of our thoughts on the event & some tips to get the most it for indie devs... --- About Gamescom⭐️ Indie developers at Gamescom get the best of both worlds. You get both the consumer section & the business section. No matter where you are in the life cycle of your game, there's business for you to do there! Most people use Meet to Match to expand their network 📢 Make sure you have a reason for going! 📒✅ FOMO can be so real in the games industry, but if you're not pitching or showcasing your game right now, sometimes it's better to stay home and stay focused on development! Tips for Booking Meetings 🗓️ Remember to include a link to your pitch deck or trailer when reaching out to publishers & investors so they see what kind of game you're pitching. Sadly, meeting requests without this kind of information are very often declined! 🚫 Show up to the Meeting Prepared! 📚 Meeting slots are usually ~30 mins long, BUT many of the people you’re meeting with will have back-to-back meetings scheduled & will need 5-10 minutes to move to their next meeting Meaning you only have ~20 mins. Make it count & come prepared! Business + Partying = 🙅♀️ We’ve heard some weird advice before that “business deals are made at parties” but in our experience this is not true. What IS often made at parties are hangovers 🤢 Parties are fun & can be a great way to meet people, but they shouldn’t be top priority. Take care of yourself (and please be safe!) so you’ll feel healthy and prepared for your business meetings! --- We hope you will have a lot of fun at Gamescom and that you will do great business for your game! Maybe we’ll even see you there! 💜 Questions? Leave them in the comments! We’d also love to hear any tips you might have for Gamescom! 🤔 #gamescom2024 #indiedevs #indiegames

I had the privilege of being asked to join this talk during Develop talking about surviving this year that we've had. you can see some of my takeaways in this great write up, but I wanted to reiterate the points I'd made 😁 First of, looking at the people who are left in studios that go through redundancy; it's easy to look past it, but months of uncertainty, being at risk, and seeing you and your closest friends' lives being upended at a moments notice will absolutely kill any morale and passion people have. We are a creative industry that runs on passion (and, to a certain extent, has taken advantage of this to deliver games that are too big and developed too quickly). We can't make good games & continue innovating if we kill creativity off. So look after your people, and find ways to rebuild trust & morale after the dust has settled, if dust needs settling. But especially, don't expect people to continue business as usual when it feels like everything is falling apart at the seams around them, and don't expect productivity to be at an all times high when you've cut teams! And secondly - With over 20,000 people having lost their job in the past year, we are at a massive risk of losing our greatest talent and knowledge that we built over the years in this industry. People keep talking about 'the great indie revival' - But it can't happen if we don't invest in it. Find ways to invest in the future of games, and support indies that want to start their own studios. We have so much stories that still need to be told, and so much innovation yet to come! That can't happen without support at the start, and this is something we can all do, together 💖 Thanks again James Batchelor for having me!! 😁
For my talk at this year's Develop Conference, I invited an array of guests to join me on stage or via video and share advice on how to survive 2025 in the games industry. Key takeaways can now be found on GamesIndustry.biz, and I wanted to say a huge thanks to my guests: Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, Caroline Marchal, Ella Romanos, Ulas Karademir, Alexander Sliwinski, Jude Ower MBE, Stefanía Guðrún Halldórsdóttir, Cinzia Musio, Moo Yu, Alyx Jones, Gina Jackson OBE,Charles Cecil To everyone pushing through these difficult times, look after each other and keep going

☝️ Even if it might sound fancy, reskinning is not a new concept in the industry. In fact, some of the most iconic and successful games of all time are examples of reskins, such as Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Angry Birds, and Candy Crush Saga. These games have been reskinned countless times, with different characters, settings, colors, sounds, and features, to suit different audiences, platforms, markets, and trends. But reskinning is not only for big studios and blockbuster titles. It can also be a powerful and cost-effective strategy for mid-size and indie developers who want to extend the life of their games, reach new players, and boost their revenue, without having to start from scratch every time. 🎮 Sounds appealing? Talk to Xwan Lim, who’s our expert on the topic, and sign up for a free consultation. #InnovecsGames #reskinning #gamedev #gameart

A week on from #PGCLondon - here are my take aways: I loved it ! IRL events are a massive part of the industry and so badly needed. We all need to support these if and where we can. The UK (and the wider) games industry is in a really interesting, and challenging place. Sounds like a big GDC and DICE coming up for many studios! Everybody feels 100% confident that better times are ahead. And the market will rebound. We may never see the post-covid boom times but a return to a healthy eco system - yes. Some say 6 mths, some 12 mths, some are even saying it may take 18mths. But, all are saying we'll get there, so make some decisions and plan accordingly!! Mobile Games seems to have gone into the slowdown sooner, but is coming out now and growth is predicted this year. There are companies out there recruiting and doing very well. Finding them is the challenge! Bring on 2025! 😀
