WCRO Director Susana SáCouto Co-leads Workshops in Bogotá in Support of Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace On September 26 and 27, Professor SáCouto traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, to conduct a series of workshops and meetings with colleagues from the Laboratorio de Justicia Política y Criminal (a Colombia-based non-profit organization with expertise providing technical assistance to transitional and criminal justice mechanisms, and law enforcement agencies) for magistrates and staff of Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). These activities are part of a multi-year State Department-funded initiative titled “Enhancing the Impact of Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace through a Holistic Transitional Justice Approach,” which was recently extended for an additional two years. The project has four key objectives: 1) strengthening the capacity of the JEP to redress atrocity crimes committed during the Colombian conflict, in particular, by those who facilitated, ordered or failed to prevent or punish those crimes; 2) ensuring the JEP’s cases reflect a gender perspective and intersectional approach; 3) enhancing victim participation in JEP processes; and 4) bolstering current efforts to ensure that victims have access to competent and independent legal representation.

Well worth going to this if interested in police legitimacy and Public trust.
Folks. In my downtime I chair the society of evidence based policing (SEBP) that seeks to make evidence based approaches just a natural part of how the police operate. One success of evidence based approaches has been the understanding of how procedural justice helps both build trust and tackle crime. Some of the greatest thought leaders and practitioners on procedural justice are coming to the Royal Society for one day on the 14th June to talk through what this means for policing. It is about as on-point and relevant as anything else at the moment. SEBP is a charity that has hired the venue so ticket prices simply cover costs. Strongly recommend you come, there would be a strong return on investment (as well as lunch!) Limited tickets now available (book here: https://lnkd.in/gwgam59Q) for police officers/staff, civil servants and academics to attend our one day event on legitimacy and trust in policing at the Royal Society in London. Keynote speakers include Stockholm Prize in Criminology winners Tom R Tyler and Gary LaFree.

These inconsistencies not only endanger the fairness of criminal proceedings but also undermine public confidence in the justice system. Breaches during the pretrial phase — when suspects are most at risk of procedural violations — can lead to wrongful convictions, coerced confessions, and human rights abuses. 💡𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟-𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗙, a new EU co-funded initiative, seeks to address these pressing challenges and promote further awareness and respect for procedural safeguards, in particular those enshrined in Directive 2012/13/EU (right to information), Directive 2013/48/EU (right to legal counsel), and Directive 2016/1919/EU (right to legal aid). 📝To achieve the aforementioned objectives, this IPS-led project will analyse the extent of breaches in procedural rights occurring in the early stages of proceedings, create a range of practical resources designed to assist legal professionals and law enforcement officers in their daily work, and deliver targeted cross-national and cross-professional workshops for practitioners. ➡ You can read all about this project here: https://loom.ly/E7hwN84 🇪🇺 FULL-PROOF is led by IPS_Innovative Prison Systems (Portugal), and is partnered by the Polish Platform for Homeland Security (Poland), Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna (Italy), Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (Bulgaria), Academia de Politie A. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has released its eagerly awaited Fiscal Year 2024 DOJ Program Plan, delineating key initiatives and funding priorities aimed at bolstering public safety and community well-being nationwide. One notable solicitation within the DOJ’s Fiscal Year 2024 Program Plan is the CPD Enhancing Existing Law Enforcement Accreditation Entities. This initiative, administered through the COPS Office, seeks to support and enhance existing law enforcement accreditation bodies to facilitate law enforcement agencies’ ability to become accredited. For many agencies, the biggest hurdle in achieving accreditation lies in getting agency policies in order. Lexipol’s state-specific policies and policy management tools provide a foundation for updating policies and aligning them with state accreditation standards

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE IN ITALY 🌍✨ Exciting times for justice in Italy! 🇮🇹 Restorative justice is gaining momentum, focusing on healing and reconciliation rather than just punishment. This transformative approach is helping to rebuild communities, mend relationships, and support victims and offenders in a meaningful way. 🤝💫 Restorative justice emphasizes dialogue, accountability, and making amends, offering a path to healing for all involved. It’s a powerful shift towards a more compassionate and effective justice system. 🌟💪 Join the movement and support restorative justice in Italy! Let's work together for a more just and harmonious society. 🌐❤️ #RestorativeJustice #Italy #HealingCommunities #JusticeReform #CompassionateJustice #Reconciliation #SocialChange #PositiveImpact #JusticeSystem #CommunitySupport #TransformativeJustice #PeaceAndHealing Restorative justice is an approach that seeks to repair the harm caused by criminal behavior through a process that involves all stakeholders, including the victims, the offenders, and the community. In Italy, restorative justice has been gaining attention as a complement to the traditional punitive justice system. In recent years, Italy has implemented various restorative justice practices, especially in juvenile justice and cases involving minor offenses. The aim is to promote healing, accountability, and reconciliation, rather than just focusing on punishment. For instance, some programs facilitate meetings between victims and offenders, where both parties can express their feelings, understand each other's perspectives, and work towards a mutually agreed upon resolution. This process can help victims find closure and empower offenders to take responsibility for their actions and make amends. Italian law also recognizes the importance of mediation and conciliation, which are considered valuable tools in the restorative justice process. These practices are increasingly integrated into the criminal justice system, highlighting the shift towards a more humane and rehabilitative approach to justice. However, challenges remain, including the need for broader awareness, training for professionals, and the development of a consistent legal framework to support restorative practices across the country. Overall, the growing interest in restorative justice in Italy reflects a broader trend towards seeking more holistic and community-oriented solutions to crime, emphasizing healing and the restoration of relationships over mere retribution

🚨 New Working Paper 🚨 Across Europe, over 10,000 children remain in detention, often hidden from view and vulnerable to unreported #violence. Our latest Working Paper, developed with contributions from Penal Reform International, Terre des hommes foundation, Institute for Inspiring Children's Futures, a partnership at the University of Strathclyde and the Global Initiative on Justice With Children, brings attention to this critical issue. 📑 This research presents recent findings on the alarming prevalence of violence experienced by children in detention facilities. It reveals significant challenges arising from inconsistent legal frameworks and critical gaps in data collection, which not only violate #children’srights but also undermine their well-being and hinder effective policy responses. With key recommendations, the paper calls for immediate, coordinated action to protect children. Every child deserves to be safe, seen and heard—and it’s time to ensure that children in detention receive the protection they need. 🔗Download the resource at https://lnkd.in/eX6_ntBv #EndVAC #SDG16
