Volkswagen have breathed life back into the world of saloons with this sleek electric battleship designed exclusively for crushing motorways with an upper range limit of 437 miles. Take that, Tesla. The sophisticated ID.7 is a flagship electric saloon from Volkswagen that features a class-leading range and ultra-aerodynamic design. It sits in VW’s range of saloons above the Arteon (remember that?) and also shares an electric platform with the VW ID.5 SUV. And the ID.7 is a car that’s very much at the ‘executive’ end of the leasing spectrum, providing healthy competition for the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. But is it the lease for you? Is there any reason Toyota shouldn't go all-hybrid. Like, now? The Japanese automaker already has made hybrid gas-electric engines standard in popular models like the Camry sedan, Sequoia SUV and Sienna minivan. And demand for hybrid versions of the RAV4 and Corolla compacts is off the charts. Much like one wouldn't expect wielders of iron age technology to keep a stockpile of bronze weaponry or propellers to win out over jet engines, it seems odd for Toyota not to press it's industry leading advantage in hybrids. There are arguments over cost (higher), supply (still somewhat limited) and regulation (BEVs are still effectively mandated.) But economies of scale, a new battery plant in North Carolina and shifting policy in DC could make for an easier glidepath to going hybrid-only by 2025-ish. That's cold comfort to fans of V6 engines. But much like GM dropped passenger cars (bye Malibu) and Nissan is abandoning full-size pickups (sayonara Titan), each carmaker has to pursue its comparative strength. And hybrids are where it's at for Toyota. So does it make sense for Japan's biggest automaker to continue making gas-only vehicles? This is undoubtedly a very complex transition process. Just half a year ago, despite many difficulties, everyone, not only OEM and T1 but also market and customers, accepted the rapid transformation to BEVs as an unchanging premise. Toyota, breaking their stubborn stance, hurriedly showed impatience as a latecomer to the BEV market. However, now, as if nothing happened in last several years, most players in this value chain have adjusted their strategy to respond to the market through the expansion of xEVs as an intermediary product. Recently, Toyota, which was trailing behind in EV, has become the frontrunner again as the direction reversed, boasting loudly. (Of course, I believe that Toyota that I've known as a top OEM has deeply learned the recent lessons and is thoroughly preparing internally to secure future leadership in the BEV/SDV industry.) The emergence of xEV as a stopgap, a pause in the transition process, is an ideal situation for Toyota to realize their competitive advantage based on their "core" competencies. And Other OEMs with xEV development capabilities will have to return to the past and focus on competing with Toyota. This situation is undoubtedly very disadvantageous for OEMs like Tesla and VW, which either do not have xEV solutions or have weak ones. And note that in this period of confusing regression, somewhat new technologies like EREVs, in which Chinese OEMs are leading, could quickly become the new turning point. And they could become major players in global Automotive industry and its value chain. Considering the history, importance, and scale of this industry, it might be natural for such significant difficulties, delays, and confusion to occur during a major value chain transition of this magnitude. And I am excited to focus on researching these changes including SDV intensively during my stay in DC.

Volkswagen's best-selling passenger car is a strong unit, and the R-Line scratches that performance itch nicely. The T-Roc is a great car even in entry-level form, and the R-Line adds that bit of extra spice on top.The compact proportions will suit many people too, especially those living in built-up areas. Practicality and cargo space isn’t compromised either, in fact it out-does a lot of its competition. Think Volkswagen. Think Waverley Volkswagen. For more information on pricing and availability. VW has no plans for 2-speed transmissions in EVs VW sees no need for multi-speed transmissions in EVs It tested a manual transmission for performance EVs More efficient EVs might be more expensive, VW says It seems Volkswagen won’t be following Porsche or Mercedes-Benz. On Thursday at the 2024 Los Angeles auto show Kai Grünitz, head of global research and development for Volkswagen, told Green Car Reports that the automaker doesn’t see a need for 2-speed transmissions in EVs. Grünitz said that “today there is no plan to produce it,” but the executive quickly noted that’s “because there’s no demand from the customer side,” for multi-speed transmissions in EVs.
