In today’s fast-changing research environment, creativity is becoming more crucial than ever. While there are major breakthroughs across various fields, there’s a growing worry that truly disruptive, groundbreaking research is becoming rarer. Why might that be? One reason could be the rise of artificial intelligence. While AI provides remarkable tools for streamlining processes, it also risks narrowing our vision. By its nature, AI operates within known parameters, it enhances what we already understand, but doesn’t necessarily bring us to new frontiers. Genuine innovation often stems from human creativity, intuition, and thinking beyond conventional limits. As psychologist Marie-Louise von Franz (my favourite author) once remarked, “Creative work can only come from the individual, for the collective mind by itself has no creative power.” That’s why nurturing creativity in individuals is vital. We need environments where researchers can play with ideas, experiment, and move beyond traditional boundaries. After all, history’s most disruptive ideas came from bold leaps of imagination, not from step-by-step progress. As we continue incorporating AI into research, it’s crucial to remember that creativity is what will push us forward. Top 10 takeaways from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)'s #ai Index Report 2024. Strangely (at least for me), the environmental impact is not part of the takeaways, although the chapter on it (2.13 Environmental Impact of AI Systems) is very interesting. Just consider this figure below illustrating CO2 equivalent emissions. 1. AI beats humans on some tasks, but not on all. 2. #industry continues to dominate frontier AI research. 3. Frontier models get way more expensive. 4. The United States leads China, the EU, and the U.K. as the leading source of top AI models. 5. Robust and standardized evaluations for #llm responsibility are seriously lacking.  6. #generativeai investment skyrockets. 7. The data is in: AI makes workers more productive and leads to higher quality work. 8. #scientificprogress accelerates even further, thanks to AI. 9. Creativity research shows it benefits from at least five key ingredients: Scale (concept network size): If we know more, there is more fodder for ideas. Volume (# of ideas): Across many disciplines, those who generate more output are more likely to have more creative ones Variation (diversity of knowledge/experience): Creativity often comes at the knowledge seams, and those with diverse knowledge and perspectives have the edge. Openness (receptivity to possibilities): This is the one I think is most deficient. The evidence is that openness is much more important than intelligence, and that high intelligence may lead to less openness. Intuitive Judgment (recognizing what matters): I say intuitive because the act of consciously thinking too much about it can shut off creativity. The last two should be the ones that school focuses on given AI's progress. Lack of openness will lead to rejecting AI ideas that are sometimes better (leading I believe to more human replacement).
